[ARCHIVED THREAD] - I hate Windows 8 (Page 1 of 2)

| I just picked up a new laptop the other day and it has windows 8 on it...and as the title says, I hate it. I'm finding it tough to navigate and it seems I've lost functions that I enjoyed with earlier windows programs. Is there any reason why I couldn't just go buy windows 7 and install it on my new computer or is that like dividing by zero? Sorry not a nerd, so I have to ask. Thanks. |

It will restore the desktop you are used to. 8.1 is great...if you have a touchscreen. |

I have 8.1 on my surface 2 tablet and while there was a slight learning curve, now that I am used to it, it makes so much more sense. I don't know what all the whining and knashing of teeth is all about. The start screen makes sense. I still have a desktop. And on my surface 2 I have office and can do excel spreadsheets and surf the web at blazing speeds!!!! I don't even have the pro version! I don't understand the love of the ipad after getting my tablet. I looked at them with the intention of getting one but having office already installed (the rt verison) swayed me. I have had no problems with the RT version of office. I cannot see me screwing with a laptop ever again! If/When this breaks hopefully I will be able to get whatever surface pro is out at the time. I drop this thing several times a day, I can't believe I haven't broken it yet. ![]() Oh, I love windows 8.1. Not sure if it's the same as 8.0 but since I have 8.1 and not 8.0 I don't' give a shit. |

Windows 8 is great if you're using a touch screen. . . . otherwise not so much. It reminds me of that scene from idiocracy, so feel free to talk about the "slight learning curve" |

The look on the guys face was like I was on the set for the movie.

Well you have a surface, not a regular laptop. 8 flat out sucks balls (imo) with a regular desktop/laptop. I have it on my phone and love it, super simple, but on my work/home computers no thank you. I've grown up using windows and I want my fucking start menu in the lower left. I want my stuff where it has been for the last decade or so. I believe windows 8 would've been a great seller if they would have allowed users to choose between the new metro/live tile bullshit and a classic windows setup (kinda like what the free 5MB classic shell file does) 8 is fast, I like it on my phone, and would really like a surface pro 3. On a desktop with no touch screen, it is stupid and classic shell is great. You get the benefits of 8 with the look and familiarity of 7 |

I just got my first W8 PC about a month ago. First thing I did was download 8.1 because I heard it much improved the OS, so I can't really comment strictly on W8... I don't like the tiled start page, but there is a regular traditional desktop start page where you can pin your programs and stuff that comes with 8.1 anyway... and everything functions pretty much like W7 for the most part.... you can flip-flop between the tile and traditional start page by clicking the windows icon on the bottom left of the screen.
It took me a couplea sessions farting around finding where things are and stuff to get the thing set up just the way I like, but I think it's great now... I even switch back and forth between the tiled start page for certain things because it's convenient in some cases, like weather and email.. Another thing I did was uninstall a bunch of useless(to me)apps becasue they were constantly wasting my start up time updating... kinda like they do on Android devices. The very best thing I did was download Chrome browser(first time using it)... literally took like 2 minutes and it is lightning fast for my purposes... this is a small Acer Revo HTPC. Stick with it, you'll get adjusted. |

I actually rarely use it, I have a Bluetooth mouse, and a regular mouse. I just had to learn where things were and learn a few of the new features. I did a couple tweaks, like put a start/shutdown icon on the start screen. |

You might be able to do it for free. Who made your laptop? ETA: I've tried to tell several people how they can load previous versions of Windows on their OEM PCs for free, but no one cares. I give up. Good luck. |
