What he said.  Muscle relaxers are the worst thing you can do.  The spasm is a defensive reaction to the real problem--IOW a symptom and not the problem.

Physical Therapist.  People on this site seem to have a hard on for chiropractors.  They serve a purpose, but all they do is joint mobilizations, and are usually temporary fixes.  A PT has a bag or tools at his/her disposal, and they generally have a lot of experience with pt's with back pain/spasms.

I have had what I considered back spasms and muscle relaxers and narcotic pain killers for a day or two and I was good as new.

YMMV

Have you ever tried a TENS unit?  It will block the pain, you can wear it as long as you want, and you don't have to take mind altering drugs.

I've had some good days with muscle relaxants and non-narcotic pain killers when I've had to deal with muscle spasms in my back.

I took my last Soma tablet and got my own EMS Rehab Stimulator. Cost me $400 out of pocket and I needed an Rx at the time. I discovered EMS through my chiropractor but PT's use the same device. It was worth every damn dime. Now when they strike, the wife slaps the pads on my back and I dial up the juice, the drugs couldn't even come close to providing the same level of relief.

But that's what "real" doctors, you know people with M.D after their name prescribe so it can't be wrong.

Sometimes followed by a couple days flat of my back in the bed.

I wish I had listened to my dad when I was younger and he told me to not gut myself picking up heavy shit by myself. Just because you can doesn't mean you should.

I think the best approach is to see a PT or MD who can help you find the right tools. Meds serve a purpose too, as does a TENS. I've used everything available over 14 years of back problems.

What you need is a professional who can help you develop a game plan.

Ice pack is the way to go. If you use heat, make sure you finish with ice for 20-30 minutes.

I learned this from my physical therapist a few years ago. I really wish I learned it a lot earlier.

Flexerill and a day of rest does wonders.  Used to take vioxx but they yanked that from the market.  Now I just take some advil.   Used to ocassionaly get bouts where I would be laid up for a week.
