I read recently an opinion that Spanish was the lingua franca of scholars in the late 19th century. I take issue with that and can find no evidence that it was true. Latin, sure, but Spanish?

Any opinions?

I always thought it was French for Politics/Diplomacy and Latin/Greek for scholarship.
