Specifically, a dog.

Had her 13 years.....what's a "normal" grieving period? Been a month and I'm still pretty devastated.

Check local shelters. Get a new pup. That'll help.

ETA: My Calvin passed a year ago. Had him since he was a baby. Still miss him quite a bit, even with the new dag.

In the past whenever I lost one of my boxers I swore I'd never get another one.  It just sucks so bad when you lose a pet you love to even think about another one.  However, without fail, in about 6 months I adopt another one (or two).  I do it partly because I just love pets and miss not having them around and partly because there's always a dog that needs a home.  All of my boxers are rescues and giving them a home helps me get over losing the previous one.

OP, there is no set time.  My lab, Gunny, passed last Sept.

I can finally look at pictures of him without getting a bit misty.

When we put our last down, I was pretty much a wreck until we got another one that quickly began to fill that space in my heart.

My Buffy passed away over 18 months ago. She was 14 years old.

I'm still not comfortable about replacing her.  Miss her still.

This. The one and only thing that doesn't totally suck about losing a pet is you get to have a new puppy or kitty!

it is a personal timeline...if after 6 months depression and lack of enjoyment ensue, then seek help.  BUT  I would also consider calling your ped and ask for a referral to either a grief support group or counseling.  Depending on past loss, this can get hairy.

my dog of 17 years died when I was 18 and overseas in korea...I'll be 37 at the end of this month and I'm just starting to think about getting another dog.

never let myself grieve because every one said she was "just a dog, get over it"...my "getting over it" was to never put myself in the situation where I had to deal with something dying.

thinking about getting a black/chocolate lab...eventually.

This. Take as long as you need. Dogs are family and anyone who judges you for how long you grieve is a shitbag who doesn't deserve to be loved like that.

My childhood dog passed away when i was in college and i wasnt there for him. I was only an hour away but i still would have wanted to be with him when he passed to at least let him know i loved him. And yes, i literally cried for days. My professors could tell how bad i was taking it and they emailed me all the notes for days I was out. About the only time i have cried in the past 15 years and that includes the death of some loved ones.

When our Feline Leukemia cat finally passed, she had become such a huge part of our lives that it took a while to adjust to not having to work around both her quirks and her medical treatment. Still, she was a helluva cat and we still miss her and it's been over a year and a half. (See here for the Myuo thread about her.)

Death is inevitable.  Know that you gave purpose to that dogs life and take what time you'll need.  Depending on your relationship with the dog it could be a while.

No, it's NEVER too soon for an ass to roll up on GD....

OP, I don't know, I remember when I was burying the dog of my youth, a GSD/Beagle, back in '82, how alone that made me feel, I still feel the sorrow I felt when I buried my GSD/Rottie, Mox, back in 2001, just not so often and not so much. More so, our little border Collie/GSD, Azhia, whom we got when we first got married, she died in 2003, right after we got back from Italy and transferred to Virginia. The Sheltie I buried last October, Hope, still brings a thought and sometimes a tear even now. My two Collies that I have now make me smile every day, but if things work out as planned, I'll bury them some day too. Even with all that, I'd hope to have each of them pass through my mind from time to time, rather than carry as empty a soul as that poor toothandnail must...

Its been a lil over a year since my Choc Lab was hit by a speeding car.....
It was very bad for me, I had to take off from work when I found out. My boss was all kinds of ticked off and couldnt figure out why...over a dog.
We since have gotten 2 dogs.....Although my daughters and wife are OK,  I miss him and don't care too much about the other dogs.

I've had a lot of dogs in my life and I always realized they don't live as long as you would like
them to.
When I would lose one I would think about how they were, and the joy and also the pain in the
ass they could be.
I looked forward to my next dog and how I could train it better than the last and wonder what
personality the next one will offer.
The one I have now is getting old and he is the best dog I ever had, I will miss him but
the next is going to be the same breed (Boarder Collie) but I will raise this one as a pup
and probably he will be even better. (got my current BC as an adult)

My attitude has always been fond memories and they were great while they lasted but
I can't wait for the opportunity to do it all over again. The nature of a dogs life is to bring happiness
for a short time and then say good by only to let another dog give his best shot.

I still tear up over a lot of the pups I've had.. Rover when I was 6, Snoopy I when I was in my mid twenties, Jeb and Roxie who passed within the last 2 years but we're a 2 dog family so when one passes we are usually looking for rescue dogs after a couple of months after one passes.  There's no way to replace the attitude and individuality of the deceased pup but it bothers me to think of so many hounds in shelters and I usually wind up adopting the one that looks the neediest or the one that was obviously the runt of the litter.

I waited 10 weeks when I lost my 13 year old dog.  I forgot how much having a puppy sucks.  But its worth it.
