I picked up a motorcycle earlier this month and without thinking twice, called my auto and home insurance company (State Farm) and started a new policy for the bike.

When my agent told me the price, I was surprised with the premium. I was expecting much lower, but I was so excited to ride that I just went with it.

Last night I was was looking around at other insurance providers and got an instant quote from Progressive. The exact same coverage from Progressive is HALF of what State Farm is charging me.

That being said I would like to cancel my coverage with State Farm and go with Progressive.

Does anyone know if there is some sort of penalty associated with canceling a policy? Also, I paid my premium for the year so I am covered until July 2015...am I SOL money wise or will they refund me for the X amount of days they provided coverage?

I think they will credit you the difference once you cancel your policy. I pay $26.00 a month for my comprehensive coverage....give them a call they will explain it

State Farm will pro-rate your cancellation and refund, meaning you pay for coverage only for the time it was in force.

Now find an independent agent who carries Dairyland MC insurance. In most areas it will be much less than Progressive, with better coverage.

Ignore all the GD guys who are going to give you horror stories about Progressive, Dairyland, and even State Farm.

Go for the best price.

You're welcome.

That's interesting.   State Farm has always been spoken of highly in the MC community for having the lowest rates.  I guess that's changed.

I've been with Flo.

I recently left State Farm for Geico on my cars.  I didn't pay a penalty.  Got a check for the difference.

wife and i just cancelled with nationwide mid term, not only did they still automatically draft the monthly premium even though we asked them not to, they informed us that we would only be getting about $50 back ($126 monthly payment).  they didnt say shit to us about a cancellation fee when we asked them to cancel it.  they just said "ok, we'll cancel your policy".  no "thanks for the business, sorry to see you go" nothing.  so yes, i would assume that you will have some sort of fee.  we saved about $20 a year on our inland marine, $200 on auto and $400 on homeowners, so it was worth it.  we went with a smaller company that only insures in NC.  fuck nationwide and all the other larger national carriers.

Progressive wanted $600 a month ($7200 a yr) for my Fz1 5 years ago.

I called USAA and they quoted me $77 every 6 months. WTH??

I've got a fleet in the garage, and I've shopped my policies around. Progressive has been the best price, I've got excellent coverage, and I had to call Progressive the same day I insured one of my bikes (my buddy totaled it at the end of my street) and they were awesome.

Good luck.

That's strange because USAA uses Progressive for their motorcycle policies.

I own 3 80s era Honda Bikes.  I have them insured with Progressive.  I pay $111/year for liability w/a few extra features.

When my son got his license, I went to our State Farm Agent and got an insurance quote.  They wanted ~1000/ year for essentially the same policy.  I added him to my Progressive account and my premium went down $1.

I will have to check out Dairyland.

This.

Why we know anything about a goddamn insurance company's politics is beyond me, but they're proud of their liberal streak and should be rewarded for their outspokenness by losing the business of conservatives.

As others said, they'll prorate your refund. I had an R1 up until this year and paid only $115 a year with progressive while other providers tripled that or more when shopping.

When I bought my bike in '06, the major insurers all wanted varying shitloads of money to insure a 15-year-old bike.  I went with Bikeline, who was less than 1/4 the lowest price from the major carriers.  Their name changed at some point, but I don't recall what it is now.  Merkel or something like that.

I absolutely disagree with that statement from first hand experience.
Case in point.
I decided to go with State Sham after Dairyland raised my rate on my 2001 Suzuki 1200 Bandit S.
State Sham wanted to see my bike and take a picture of it.
No problem.
A week later I get a cancellation...Reason...My lowly Bandit was a "Speed Bike"
Screw State Sham.

I think that varies from state to state. In Florida they said because of the state they do motorcycle policies through Progressive.
