I was privy to the dreaded "Windows tech support" phone scam today.

Uknown # calls me (not quite sure why I answered it)
Me: Hello?
Asian/Indian: Herro may please be speaking to the person on the computer?
Me: What?
Asian/Indian: The person using the computer right now, I need to speak with them.
Me: (DING) Oh yea, thats me.
Asian/Indian: Yes Sir I am from Microsoft and you have a great many errors on your computer.
Me: Damn really, can you tell me how to fix them.
Asian/Indian: Yes Sir, I need you to hit the Windows key(describes the windows key) and press "R"
Me: Ok this box popped up.
Asian/Indian: Ok, type in eventvwr
Me: Ok
Asian/Indian: Now click on the "error" tab and tell me how many errors there are.
Me: OMG 7,432 errors
Asian/Indian: Its worse than I feared Sir you have a lot of problems on your system.
Me: I'm not going to let you waste the rest of your breath. I'm not stupid. I work for a law enforcement agency and we get calls about assholes like you all the time. So do yourself a favor and eat shit. Don't ever call this number again.
Asian/Indian: (Sounding super dejected and sad) Yes Sir, I am very sorry.

Scammers will call ijjits and have them run the regular event/service viewer app on windows which records many things, not just (even benign) errors.

They use this as a prelude to demanding personal information and credit card details and such, to fix the problems, because "they're from microsoft".

Enough ijjits fall for it that it pays them to keep trollin'

They call, show you how to access the event viewer and tell you that meaningless errors are harmful. Then they get you to give them access to your computer through TeamView and give them money for software. Then they delete important system files fucking your PC and tell you to FOAD.

Dupe noted.

We seriously get calls all the time of people falling for scams like this. The Green Dot scam is a huge one. A couple called us to report it an at the same time were still putting money on cards for these assholes..."oh they're gonna meet us at the bank in 30mins"...No, no they're not.

Sad. I can't fully comprehend what people who fall for this are thinking.

I got the same call tonight from "Scott Williams" which was very odd for his thick Indian accent. . This was about the 5th call in the last few weeks, but I did not have the time to screw with them.  He calls and gives me the spiel again so I play stupid, which apparently annoyed him.  He kept getting louder so I feigned outrage and asked for his supervisor.  After a few seconds, "supervisor" gets on the phone giving the spiel again.  I exclaim my hurt feelings that "Scott" gave me and he apologized.  He kept wanting me to go to my computer and I finally asked how he knew that MY computer was infected.  After seconds of silence, he finally hung up.  I will be better prepared next time to really screw with them.  I wish I was more creative.

But I found several threads on this particular scam at www.callercenter.com and this appears to be a serious matter. Several people already fell to the scheme. The authorities should look into this matter.
