Recently bought an alice pack frame online and it came with a padlock stuck on it. I've spent the last 30 minutes unsuccessfully trying to get it open with a coke can shim and I don't hold out much hope for tracking down Sgt. Keeley and asking for the key.
Will laying it on a flat surface and beating the ever loving fuck out of it with a hammer get it open or just ensure it will be stuck on there forever?

Update:

So I read all your advice and just did what I wanted to do to begin with.

Smacked the shit out of it with a hammer and it popped right open.

If you don't have giant bolt cutters for cutting padlocks(who doesn't?) use a Dremel with a cut off wheel or the really slow way is a hacksaw.

bolt cutters

or

dremel with cut off wheels (but this can catch the bag on fire if you are not careful)

Drill the lock out with a 3/8 bit where you insert key.

Bolt cutters, cut-off wheel, pick, or BFH will do the job pretty easily.

I was struggling to get a Master (brand) lock off my trailer hitch.  Eventually succeeded but later found I'd used the wrong key.....right key works easy, wrong one takes some time.

So, bolt cutters or Dremel with cut-off wheel.

Take any heavy/relatively long object and smack the crap out of it. It'll open in less than 20 seconds.

Hammer/Tire Iron/breaker bar etc.

I've cut many of master locks with bolt cutters.

Take a master key from any lock
put key in lock then apply pressure to key towards the teeth of key while working it in and out (like your jacking it off) and about the same speed and at the same time turn key.

A plain Masterlock?  Silver and blue with brass where the key is inserted?  Find a drill bit that is the same diameter as the brass insert and drill out well.  Smack it with a hammer once or twice and it will open right up.  If it doesn't ream the hole out some more until most of the piece is out and try again.  It should take less than one minute.

I have a set of lock picks that I know how to use for such things, as well as special pics for those cheap master pad locks that use the flat key with notches on each side.
the ones with the plastic ring around the bottom are EASY to pick with a torsion wrench and a paperclip!
(Just use the "jiggle and hope" method Oh and Don't look at the dogs, work the lock!

This.  Plus buy shims.  I have never made one as good as the ones I buy.  They are a disposable item, so buy lots.  As long as it is old or not a 1502/1525 lock, shimming is by far the easiest way for someone without experience.  Next to this, if it has a keyway, pick it.  Thirdly, there are plenty of manipulation techniques freely available online that will get you a reduced code set for the combination.  Lastly, sure, take the Neanderthal approach and smash it or cut it.  But this way teaches no real skill.

Depends on the lock.  Beating on them takes too much effort.

Lockpicks work well.

On many master locks they are held together with 4 rivets.  It is a hell of a lot faster to drill out these rivets than any other part of the lock.  Drill head off rivet, push out rivet with a similar sized piece of wire.

Don't know if they have Menards stores where you live but in this weeks ad they had a bolt cutter for $19.99 with a $19.99 rebate.  So for some time and effor to do the rebate you can use the free bolt cutter to take care of your problem.

We used to open those masterlocks by hitting both sides with a hammer at the same time. Sometimes it worked, sometimes you had to use boltcutters.

Worth a try.

give it a few sharp hammer blows if it doesnt fail from that advance on to some various form of cutting
unless its a heavy lock the majority of cheap locks wont even hold up to a hammer

ETA: well of course I didnt read anything before posting
I see the hammer did its job

Wife and I went to YouFit gym yesterday. She only brings her towel and drink I bring other stuff which I lock up. I put my stuff in the locker closed the lock and thought "SHIT" the key is in the locker and the spare key is in the locked car. Out to the front desk I go tell them the story then ask how they remove locks if left over night. Big sign says lockers locked over night will have lock removed. They knew nothing one guy started making calls no one he talked to knew what to do but did direct him to a hacksaw. He started sawing I finished least then 5 minutes.
