"a severe acute viral illness often characterized by the sudden onset of fever, intense weakness, muscle pain, headache and sore throat. This is followed by vomiting, diarrhoea, rash, impaired kidney and liver function, and in some cases, both internal and external bleeding. Laboratory findings include low white blood cell and platelet counts and elevated liver enzymes.
People are infectious as long as their blood and secretions contain the virus. Ebola virus was isolated from semen 61 days after onset of illness in a man who was infected in a laboratory. The incubation period, that is, the time interval from infection with the virus to onset of symptoms, is 2 to 21 days." LINK |

If you contract it, it has a high mortality rate, and the way it kills you is painful and messy. Basically your organs starts to bleed, and you either bleed out, or going into shock, or develop sepsis. The good news is it's not easy to contract. Ebola is very unstable outside the body. Short of coming into contact with a person or monkey that is dying or has died from it, you're probably not going to get it. Even in absolute shitholes like Liberia, where they like to fondle their dead, eat rotting bush meat, including monkeys, have poor sanitation, and very limited access to healthcare, it's only killed 100's of people over the last 6 months. Compare that with the flu, which kills 3,000-50,000 Americans each year, Ebola is a lightweight. |

but but.."it's a plane ride away" from the US
Do you think when it gets here we will all be running the "its happening" gif? I know things like the Flu or Bird sickness is bad but they sure dont sound as scary as "Eeee--BOWL-AHHHH" I think the news will scare everyone to death with the "Eeee--BOWL-AHHHH" news. You know some preppers are hoping for it just to say.. "We told you so" |

I understand its some bad stuff but what is and what does it do? Is it a death sentence? Ebola is a family of hemorrhagic fevers. Basically, if you have it and start hemorrhaging, you will bleed out of almost everywhere you can. Mortality rates depend on the strain, and range from 40% to 90% mortality. There is no known cure, treatment is limited to easing symptoms. It is on a very short list of things I wouldn't wish upon my enemies. Actually, I think it may be the only thing on that list. ETA The good news is what posters above pointed out. It is purely blood/fluids to blood transfer. So don't fuck someone bleeding out of their eyes, ears, and nose in Africa and you should be good

I still wonder if the impact of how scared folks will be will outweigh the actual impact of the virus. |

Yeah go to this thread there is a documentary posted within. |

You bleed out. 90% death rate. About 60% nowadays, across all infections, IIRC. 90% is Zaire, and Reston doesn't appear to infect humans at all. Currently no vaccine or treatment besides palliative care, though there are some interesting developments. Even in survivors, it may persist in body fluids for a few months after becoming asymptomatic. Including semen. It's a fragile little bastard though, and known strains burn so hot they would have a hard time becoming pandemic, they just kill the hosts too much and too fast. It does have potential for biowarfare/bioterrorism. Tom Clancy had such a scenario in Executive Orders. |
