Odds are we don't having many members posting from there.

I was there about 13 years ago for the last time. It was interesting to say the least. There were 6 lane roads, and not many cars, and they were just getting the manufacturing revolution going there. I was at the duracell battery plant. Looked like a prison work farm to me, with a barracks next door to the factory.
I ate pretty good, and had some fun with the expats working there, but would not consider that a place to stay for a long period of time.
way too hot and humid for me.

Over twenty years ago.  I imagine it has changed a lot.  Best food in China (Cantonese are known for their cooking).

I'm there once or twice a year on business. Not exactly a vacation paradise but there are some very nice western-style hotels and if you hook up with the locals, there is some great food to be found.

Can't claim to be an expert but what are you looking for?

Business or pleasure?

We actually had a decent "China" thread in the SF a couple years ago with some great travel advice:

Well worth the read if you haven't traveled to China before.

I loved my time spent there.

As others have stated, great food,
lots to see, friendly folks.

Liberty Park was/is a must see for
any freedom loving American.

I think they may have Commiefied it
now, but when I saw it, the American
donors names were still on every block
of the monument.

Guangzhou is the Philadelphia of China regarding political freedom.

Been there several times. Not really my favorite city in China. I guess if I am in that part of the country I would prefer to go a little bit further and stay in Hong Kong.  I will be visiting Guiyang in one week to see my wife's family.  The best food in China is in Guizhou or Sichuan, not in Guangdong province.

Hunan province is no slouch, either.

Given the choice between breathing and holding my breath, I'll have to make a concession to breathing.
