I found one in the woods last year and would normally save such an item to decorate my abode, but it kind of gave me the creeps so I left it alone. It was just the way it was positioned perfectly on the top of a knoll and propped up like it had crawled onto a fallen treebranch to watch the woods. It was 10 feet behind me the whole afternoon I was sitting there but didn't see it until I got up to leave. I don't mess with shit like that.
But afterwards I did some research and found out that a perfectly bleached turtle shell that is still completely intact like that one was is quite a fortunate find. I wish I would have kept it. |

Quoted: Some guy was selling them for $50 a piece. If it hasn't been cracked open by a bird, it's a good one. Quoted: Quoted: I've got one in my backyard right now.... what's so special about them? Some guy was selling them for $50 a piece. If it hasn't been cracked open by a bird, it's a good one. Selling or asking $50 a piece? Huge difference

Selling or asking $50 a piece? Huge difference No telling if he's actually selling any. Here is an arrangement of five listed for $3,800. Granted they are turtles from Borneo, but still bleached turtle shells. http://www.mdantiques.com/collection-915-1-vintage_bleached_tortoise_shells.html So $50 sounds reasonable for an ordinary eastern box turtle. |

Gotta admit, those look pretty cool. I just use to stack them and throw rocks at them when I was a kid. Mostly box and snapper shells though.

This one I saw was badass. I bet it would have fetched $100 on ebay. It had perfectly symmetrical fringe patterns along the front and the back that hadn't bleached yet and was in perfect condition. Too perfect, which added to the spookiness. |
