It seems like it all really comes down to Quintus. Without him Maximum would've never killed Commodus in the end, but at first he wusses out and allows Maximus to be almost executed and his family killed. What changed? He should've known instantly that Commodus was a shitbag. It's like Quintus had to wait for it all to play out in the open, like he had to capitulate as long as everything was going on underhandedly. That just gives him and easy out, though. When it appears to the public that Commodus dies with honor, Quintus gets out easy. |

I always saw it as Quintus being loyal to the position of the Emperor, regardless of who was in power. It wouldn't look good for the Emperor to win in an unfair fight, so the weapons remained stayed.
If anything, what I took away from it was that matters of succession should best be dealt with in a public forum instead of midnight backroom deals. |

I guess Quintus overhears something about Commodus killing Marcus Aurelius before that last scene. Maybe that's what did it for him; he realized that Commodus was not the rightful emperor. |
