Been getting what I thought was "Junk Mail" flyers for a couple weeks now... Saying that I was selected for some Nielsen shit???

Anyways, today I go get my mail, and theres this packet looking thing... I was right about to toss it out, but I got distracted, and brought it back in with me.

Curiosity got the best of me, so I opened the fucker, and I out pops this...

WTF is this (Besides some $1 bills)? And should I be diving through the recycling bin at my apartment buildings recycling can... Or am I special?

You've never heard of Nielsen ratings?

Nope, Nielsen is legit. They are the company that does all the TV show ratings. It was a common household name when I was still living at home and dad worked in the TV business.

How do they do it nowadays, with a survey?

If I recall, they used to have some kind of box to track what you were watching.  When I was a kid one of the neighbors was a Nielsen family.

Off to the Google!  ETA:  Looks like they can do both, but self-surveys are common.  In the age of the DVR I was wondering what they would do, it wasn't like back in the day when you warmed up the TV for Dukes of Hazzard at a specific time.

I did it a few years ago with internet data use.  AR-15.com got a lot of traffic from me during that time.

Got something similar a few years ago from a radio station.

$5 in first envelope. Couple more times I got mailings with $1 in them.

It asked if I wanted to track my radio listening for 1 week. So I did.

Wonder if they liked the fact that I listened to talk radio and never to their shitty pop music station.

Never heard from them again, never listened to their station either..

Much of my career hinged upon Nielsen ratings.

These days it's Arbitron.

J.D.Power sent me a whole dollar to fill out a survey telling them how much I liked buying my new car.

That was awesome, an extra dollar off the MSRP is how I saw it!

They found that cash works well to get people to fill out surveys. Free market at work. I have gotten a couple, probably $50 for an hour or two of effort max
