No AR500 steel, but I've got a couple of used up, warped, frying pans I'd like to use as cheap gongs basically.  I'd like to hang them by the handles out around 100 yards and hit them with 5.56 (greentips and xm193), .223, and 22lr.  Any issues with this?  I'm assuming everything but the 22lr will go right through and that nothing will be coming back my way or towards anyone else at the range.

I think you will only hear the hits on the 22lr.

The rest will cruise through and you probably will think you missed depending on the weight of the target and how you secure it.

Frying pans weighing 3 or 4 pounds, hanging from wire.  I can't see any dangerous ricochets happening, I just want to be sure.

If you're talking about using cast iron pans, all they will do is get a bunch of holes in them (even from .22LR).

The ones I've shot at got holes almost 1" in dia from .22 and nice 1/4" holes from the .223.

Cast iron is brittle and not good for anything other than 1 time use target.  Do yourself a favor and get a real target if you want to shoot steel.

If it's just a steel or aluminum pan, you'll just punch holes in it. You likely won't see any rebounds.

If it's cast iron, like klutz said, it'll just shatter.

I agree that poking holes won't generate any noticeable ringing, so its a small percentage chance or ricochet with a 0% chance of being a fun target.

Buy targets made for shooting is my vote, and wear glasses for sure I've seen 22's bounce off all kinds of shit.

My shooting buddy brought a pan out to shoot 22 at. It was black with a non stick coating. It didn't ring or even move when the 22's went right though it. Was as uneventful as shooting paper. I think it was coated aluminum.

Imprint of rifling from a 338 round going through a (cast?) aluminum pan. I still prefer AR500, but I'm pretty biased. You want 3/8" AR500 for 100 yards with a 556.

If you hang them by a single line you may see movement as the bullet punches thru .

I shot an old heavy pan with a .44 cal Black Powder Colt went right through it.
