Quoted:
He looks like there was plenty of Kosher food to eat down south. Not a meal skipper, that guy. At the time of the Civil War's start, the 2nd largest synagogue in the US was located in Albany, GA. There is a large amount of generally unknown Jewish history involved in the southern states. The involvement of Jewish people in the Confederacy should be viewed no more differently than the involvement of their non-Jewish neighbors. They were landowners and businessmen who saw their way of life threatened by the North's stance on abolishing slavery without regard for the economic impact it would have on the South. Therefore when it came to fighting over the issue, they fought on the side that was supportive of their own economic interests. |

There were some honorable men who fought in the confederacy.
As for fighting for "states rights" is concerned... The confederacy built a top-heavy, economy-destroying central-government... That was horribly managed, and horribly led... And spread resources too thin and didn't effectively force Texas to send money and men like the rest of the slave states... |

Judah P Benjamin - I'm doing a research paper on him ; if anyone has any good information for me that would be great. everything I've read says he was smart if not the brains of the confederacy . Motives would be interesting to know but he left no manifesto behind and became very mysterious after the war : Discuss http://images2.wikia.nocookie.net/__cb20061011165550/turtledove/images/c/c5/Benjamin.jpg I would assume his motive was more or less the same anyone else.... fighting/supporting his home |
