4 weeks until i am in the BWCA.  I cant wait, my buddies and i do a annual camping/fishing trip and we alternate between the BWCA and the Quetico . Unlimited fresh walleye for dinner and absolute peace and quite in the wilderness.  If anyone is looking for an amazing outdoors camping/fishing trip i absolutely recommend the BWCA. This is not your normal camping trip, you could easily be days away from the closest form of civilization.  So, is anyone here going up to the BWCA this year?

Went in 96 and 97. The Wenonah was the best for the portage around silver falls. Ate walleye till we were sick. Lol. I need to go back.

Last time I was there was about 10 yrs ago. We have done multiple trips there before starting on Moose Lake, the number chain, and one year, right at the border (accessed by Moose Lake) for Quetico. The first time up there, first morning out a bear tried to liberate our food stuffs. Otherwise, amazing place. I would love to go back.

My friends and I have a 12-14 hour drive and we stay between 1 to 2 weeks each time and it is totally worth the drive.  We usually have 4 people and we just switch off driving so each person does a total of 3 hours.  Just imagine the most pristine lakes and forests with the BEST freshwater fishing in the lower 48 .  The most unique thing about this area is that there are no motorized vehicles allowed boats/atv's ect...  There are so many lakes and the area is so big it is impossible to get bored.   If you go, I promise you that when you get home you are going to start planning your next trip.  Do you have any specific questions?

Haven't been there for two years.  Hoping to go again next year.  Just as you described it...absolute peace and quiet.

Iron lake is my favorite.  Caught a 30" walleye there.

Where are you heading to OP?

This time we are starting at EP30 (Lake One) and doing a loop up to snowbank, normally we like the more remote EP's but since the big fire the permits per day for EP30 have been reduced and we want to see how the forest is growing back.

It has been a long time.  I went up there with my dad and a bunch of scouts for a trip that was just over a week.  I still remember the great views, being so far away from everything, the portages, sleeping really well after all of the paddling, and mostly the mosquitoes!

Haven't been up there since the mid-90's (when I moved to Az). But it's a hell of a trip.

2 times ago... We were right on the border between BWCA and Quetico. There were 11 of us... 8 in the BWCA, 3 in Quetico. The fact that I could yell, into Canada, to tell them breakfast was ready was pretty cool.

Without digging my map out of the attic I can't tell you where we were. But I could find it on the map easy, even now. The BWCA is one thing I do miss about the midwest.

The wind blows all the trees down and traps the tourists.

The reason i think that it stays so quite and pristine is that the park service only allows a certain amount of people up there each year.

I'll head up to at least do some backpacking. It's world class stuff. The paddling is good, but I only use it to get up into the Q.

The Q.

Twice as big, 10% of the people.

Did two weeks from Quetico in 2000.  Amazing place, amazing trip.  Love to do it again, but it ain't close.  One of the most memorable trips of my life.

ps.  I will probably never again experience that many mosquitos.  At about dinner time they became deafening.  Getting in your tent every evening was an adventure.  Unzip, jump in, zip.  Then 5 to 10 minutes killing the little buggers that came in with you.

I agree, the Q is much better but it is more expensive than the BWCA.  Also no live bait, barbed hooks and no firearms up there.  We are planning a 3 week trip next year to  Wabakimi Provincial Park, supposedly it is to the Q as the Q is to the BWCA.

That is the one thing that makes me hesitant to go. I can't stand mosquitoes and biting flies. Is there a good time to go, that is halfway warm but the bugs aren't bad?

Not really but there are ways to limit the bugs.  First find a campsite that is on the east side of the lake so you can get more of a breeze, treat your clothes with permethrin and have good bug spray. Also get a bug head net.  Some years the bugs are non existent and some years there are a lot.  As long as you come prepared you will be fine.

Which lake/EP?  Is the ice finally gone? I was reading that a few still had some a couple days ago.

Went up to BWCA in 2006 with my uncle and cousin.  My first time up their and absolutely loved it.  Spent a week camping, fishing and portaging.  I can't believe it's been 8 years!

Can't beat a view like this!

My favorite time is early June, it is right around spawn and the days are nice and the nights are nice and cool but the water is COLD.
