I need to measure at least out to 100 yds in the dirt (yes, there will be smallish rocks). What's some things that you have used to measure, and had personal experiences with using. I was looking at one of those measuring wheels, but all of the cheaper ones either got crappy reviews, no reviews at all, and/or said not good to use on dirt
I'm not looking to spend over $50... It's only going to be used once or twice ETA: Digital or mechanical, just as long as it's accurate |

Find a football field or something else that's already pre-measured for you. Stand at one end and step off with your left foot and count every time your right foot hits the ground. When you get to the end, remember your pace count.
Go buy the longest tape measure that you think you'll need and a bag of popsicle sticks from a hobby supply store. Poke a popsicle stick in the ground and use that to hook your tape measure to. Stretch it out to the end and poke another popsicle stick in the ground. Repeat until you get to your desired distance. Go to a tool rental place and rent a landscapers measuring wheel. |

Need a yard measuring device ... look toward the yardstick http://cdn.dickblick.com/items/554/22/55422-0000-3-3ww-l.jpg Use the yard stick as a baseline, then measure the angle to a target from each end. Apply geometry. No walking. |

They also sell a measuring wheel with a 10K foot range for the same price. |

Buy a 100 foot steel tape, it won't stretch. Not true.... Steel tape corrections |

I have a Bosch laser measuring tool that is pretty sweet, it makes measuring floors and chimneys a breeze.
Its only good to about 100 feet or so I believe, but you could place some fiberglass sticks with a flag on the top and measure from flag to flag, or use a helper and just measure off him. |

$8.99 at Harbor Freight. Use it and throw it away. Stop over thinking this. |
