Aside from the girly car vibe yada yada...
I was at a stop light and tried to take off.  Car wouldn't move while in gear.  I can shift gears with the car on without the clutch.

Did someone steal clutch while at stop light?

Pressure plate stuck?
4/28/2014 5:44:50 AM EDT
[#2]
Yep, it broke.

Clutch worn out, Broken driveshaft or rear end gears, cv joint broken.

Does the engine stall in gear, or does it keep running without moving the car?

What do you mean by that? Are you just making a statement about your ability to drive a manual, or have you been cruising around with no clutch?

Seems like a minor problem compared to everyone thinking you are a pin cushion for dicks when you drive it but our priorites may differ

Car still runs while in gear.  The second part, I can shift into gear without having to press the clutch, I meant it as a symptom.

Hyd Clutch primary or slave cylinder booster bad. Happened in my 99 Miata

Sounds like the clutch is gone or the input shaft into the transmission has sheared(which is unlikely).

Doesn't move.  If I try to take off normal, clutch down and in gear, it makes a grinding sound, sounds like it comes from the front or so.

I posted on miata.net and some guy suggested the differential.

You could still shift gears with the car on without the clutch?  Normally I'd think the same.

Ability to shift without the clutch is not a symptom, all manuals can do it.

Check the clutch slave cylinder.

What I mean by that is I can sit there and row throw the gears while stopped with the car on and not pushing the clutch.

It's more like I don't have a garage or tools to do it myself, I live in student housing and they're sticklers about not working on cars in their parking lot.

Not sitting still with the motor running. It is not a bad slave cylinder unless it is somehow stuck in the open position. He can put it in gear without using the clutch with the motor running, that is an indicator that the pressure plate/clutch assembly is toast.

Something is fubar with clutch or input shaft.

Engine running and car stopped, no way that it should be going into any gears without the clutch to disengage the link between engine/input shaft.

Not sure how the shifter links to transmission so maybe it is a problem as well, just rowing through empty space while not moving transmission forks.

I had my slave go out (2001 nb) and the symptoms were dirty milky/low fluid level, and I'd have to prime the clutch pedal because it would basically fall to the floor. The slave is on the passenger side just in back of the front tire on the trans. Common problem but not exactly your symptoms. It's easy to check though. It's a box with a piston coming out of it that hits a linkage on the trans.

If you're forcing the gear shift and grinding, you're just pissing off your syncros.

If you are in first second third and clutch isn't depressed, you need a new clutch. Another way to see if it's the rear end is to pull the drain bolt and drip a cunt hair amount out and look for lots of shavings, it should be dark fluid, but shouldn't look like metallic Rice Krispies that got vomited up

And to 13'er the shit out of a neck beard thread, the miata is the most affordable, entry track car you can own. It dominates auto cross circuits and short tracks, and proves you don't need to be a corvette owner that spends more time in his fold up bag chair looking at it than running it to get some respect from people that wheel the shit out of their car. As long as your other vehicles and girlfriend compensate for the gheyness

I'm going with a broken input shaft.
To completely disengage a clutch disk actually takes a lot of effort and minutely possible to have the throwout bearing hang on the input shaft.

Interesting problem, I would suggest getting the car up on a hoist for proper diagnosis.

I can't help you with a mechanical problem, the Miata I owned for 9 years never had one.

I owned a Miata as a second car.  Women loved driving the car and almost every time I let them drive it the night ended with their lips around my junk.

I owned it for 9 years, I mentioned at work I was going to sell it and numerous people tried to buy it off of me, one a supervisor actually offered less than I was asking for it when others were trying to get it for my asking price.  He kept calling me and having others call me when I told him I was offended by his lowball offer and would never sell it to him at any price.

Finally sold it to another supervisor for his daughter.  Within months he was driving that vehicle to work every day.

Those who think driving a Miata equates to the driver being gay are obviously closet Homosexuals themselves.

My current daily driver is a Nissan Xterra.  If you think that vehicle equates to Homosexuality, you are once again just acting out your own true desire to have your lips wrapped around a penis while another one is thrusting into your posterior.

Stop concerning yourself with what I drive and I won't concern myself with your hanging out all day in public restrooms or bars called The Meat Rack.

I owned GM vehicles 3 times. Each one a lemon. One GM had to buy back under a state lemon law.  I've owned my Xterra since I bought it new in 2002, not one issue yet.

guys guys guys, C'mon now be nice. the op could be a female. I mean the choice of vehicle makes the likely hood of it being a female driver increase by like 3400%. If the driver is infact a female and you do help her to solver her problem, the chances of you being able to hit it like a disabled miata in a roadway are pretty good. hey don't laugh, you can hit a disabled miata pretty fucking hard, especially if you are texting

Does the clutch pedal feel different?
Does the shifter feel different?

If you can throw it into gear with the engine running, with no grind or resistance, and the car doesn't move, one of those two things should feel off.

Also try to figure out where the leak is coming from...
