School me on sunglasses.  I want something nice.  I have a ten year old pair of Revo something or other that are pretty nice.  I have a friend who likes raybans.

I don't know of any other brands really.  I'm think $150ish, no aviators.

Go!

Now they cost $150.

You are actually a very intuitive consumer.  Costa is one of the few glasses (including Dillon and other small brands) that aren't actually the same thing just rebranded.  Almost 90% of the sunglasses in existence (not the cheap $1 glasses) are all made by Luxottica.  If you can buy the glasses at any of these stores they are all the exact same lenses:

Sunglass Hut
LensCrafters
Pearle Vision

Sears Optical

That is right, the sunglasses industry is actually an Italian Monopoly.  There are a very few brands out there that are actually Luxottica.  Here's some you might recognize:

Arnette
Eye Safety Systems (ESS)
K&L (formerly Killer Loop)
Oakley
Oliver Peoples
Persol
Ray-Ban
Sferoflex
Vogue
Armani
Brooks Brothers
Bulgari
Burberry
Chanel
Chaps
Coach
Dolce & Gabbana
DKNY
Donna Karan eyewear
Fox Eyewear
Miu Miu
Polo Ralph Lauren
Paul Smith Spectacles
Prada
Ralph Lauren Purple Label
Ralph Lauren
Reed Krakoff
Stella McCartney
Tiffany & Co.

Here's some interesting reading for you:  http://www.forbes.com/sites/halahtouryalai/2013/07/02/ray-ban-oakley-chanel-or-prada-sunglasses-theyre-all-made-by-this-obscure-9b-company/

Ray-Ban, Oakley, Chanel Or Prada Sunglasses? They're All Made By This Obscure $9B Company

Go to a sunglass counter at any department store and you’ll likely see a crowd willing to pay hundreds of dollars for the perfect pair of designer shades.

The money they’re spending is going to a single company that makes just about every designer eyewear brand you can think of. The company is called Luxottica, and it made 75 million glasses last year including Prada , Tiffany & Co TIF -1.43%., Coach COH -0.36%, Versace, Bulgari, Chanel , Dolce & Gabbana, Ray-Ban and more.

.............

Today, Luxottica has cut out the middle man. It controls the whole operation. Not only is it making the glasses it but it’s also selling them directly through Sunglasses Hut, Lenscrafters, Pearle Vision–all are owned by Luxottica. (so if you bought ANY sunglasses from any of those stores you own Luxottica glasses)

That kind of model is known as vertical integration. It’s risky but it can work out very well and be extremely cost efficient.

60 Minutes on CBS last year interviewed Luxottica CEO Andrea Guerra about his company’s dominance in the eyewear space. He estimated some 500 million people were wearing his sunglasses around the world.

Oakleys are absolutely worthless, ten years ago they were decent sunglasses. If you want quality optics I vote for Costa Del Mar every time.  High quality glass lenses with lifetime warranty. Maui Jim's are decent but if you want something that will last go with vistas. I gave my oakleys away and now own three pairs of costas

Yep and regardless of where you were in the neighborhood, there was always a water hose you could turn on and get a drink.....without getting shot, mugged, or kidnapped.

Oakley Radar Pitch.  Most comfortable sunglasses I have ever worn.  http://www.oakley.com/radar

I kept them that long because they were essentially free.  I traded a small ass lazy boy recliner that was left at my rental by a tenant.  If I had paid for them they wouldn't have lasted a week.

Lots of great suggestions here.  The Oakley Crosshair 2.0 is out of my range but the regular Crosshair is $150.

What tint do you guys like best?  My Revos are amber and I like them but would I be better suited with a darker tint?

I recently had LASIC, I have always been sensitive to bright sunlight but it is a bit worse now.

The last pair I bought was a $40 pair from a bike shop.  They lasted a month before they fell off my hat in the morning while it was still dark.  I stepped on them while looking around to see what it was that made that noise.

The noise was them hitting the ground.

I also don't care for the big bulky plastic frames on a lot of sunglasses now, which has kept me away from Costa's. I keep telling myself I want to try a pair of Maui Jim's but these new Oakley Wiretap's are looking pretty sweet. I have a pair of Half-X's that are awesome but sadly are no longer made.
