The KC Star's recent article about the Jewish Community Center shooting mentions (focuses on) the fact that police believe a straw purchaser is responsible for providing the gun to the shooter. They mention that as a convicted felon, he wouldn't pass a background check. In prior articles, they mentioned that he appears to have taken part in Witness Protection. This they have alleged is the source of confusion regarding his last name(s). So, if someone gets a new identity (i.e., last name and social security number), do the authorities flag the name or link it to his conviction status? It seems to me doing so would sort of defeat the program, as the participant would find it harder to get a job, rent a home, etc. Is it possible they are spinning this as a straw purchase case so they don't have to admit that they gave him a clean ID and let him buy the gun? |
| I had a case a few years ago where a murderer was on it, I don't can remember if he had made any store purchases. He had a lot of FTF buys. I would not surprise me if they do annual records reviews on new names and most participants would not want to fill out a 4473, because a new identity does not erase your past convictions. It would be illegal to make the purchase but it would go through, but possibly noticed later. |

Didn't mean to imply that I thought it wouldn't be illegal. Just more of a question of whether he'd be denied. Let's assume he doesn't get denied and someone notices months or years later. How likely is it that they'd send someone looking for him? Of course, in this case, they are making sound like it was a recent purchase. |
| I suppose it depends on the level of the case that warranted protection. In mine, the guy snitched on competing drug smugglers and admitted to killing a couple of folks, he was given a new name etc, and was not under active protection (just got new ID). As a result he was aggressively prosecuted. |

Apparently Point Roberts, WA is a favorite relocation town for people in witness protection |

Quoted: VA-Gunut (sp?) should have fixed the the spelling error in the title when he moved it. Quoted: Quoted: I accidentally posted this in the wrong forum. Thanks VA-Gunut for the move. Does GD have any thoughts on the subject? VA-Gunut (sp?) should have fixed the the spelling error in the title when he moved it. |

I've known plenty of people in witness protection. When I knew someone was in witness protection and entered their name in the database I had access to, it just brought up the name they were assigned, stated WITSEC and gave their booking number they were assigned. There would be nothing else listed on the computer page.
People would be going by their real name one day, all of the sudden they were given a knew name and were gone. Once they left your locale you couldn't pull them up on the computer under the name they were assigned, name was likely changed again. There are U.S. Marshals Witness Security cases and then there are other types of witsec cases within the DOJ. |
