Howdy guys and gals.
So I am due for an upgrade and have 2 phones in mind. First is the new Galaxy S5 and the second is the Note 3. I have a S3 and I love it. Its been a great phone but sometimes it seems a little small. I do spend a lot of time on my phone cruising the internet and doing other things so the Note appeals to me as it has a larger screen. Is it worth the extra 100$ or is the note just too big? They seems to be fairly close as far as specs go. Any help would be appreciated. UPDATE: So I went to verizon to get the wife a new phone and I got to handle the S5, Note and the HTC One max. I liked how thin the HTC one max was and how big the screen is. It seemed like a really nice phone. Anyone have any info on it? I dont know a lot about HTC |

I spend a lot more time texting and emailing than yacking on the phone. If you talk a lot, you'll want a Bluetooth ear thing. As far as size I keep it in my shirt pocket 99% of the time. |
| My wife loves her Note 3. She wanted a good compromise between her old MyTouch and getting say a Nexus 7. It has been an excellent device, very powerful. It's a touch large in some of her pockets, but, we're talking women's pants. It fits just fine in my jeans and cargo pockets, etc. |

I'm sitting on a Galaxy S2 until September when I can pickup the Note 4 and switch carriers to one with better coverage. Quoted:

Get the Note 3, I have one and it's stellar. But, my screen started shifting after 80 days, and I now have a new one. There are others whose screen blank out. Research both phones for this issue, and possibly get 2 year insurance Thanks for the heads up. |

Rooted N3 here. Fastest phone I've ever had. Tried to use my old Razr Maxx the other day. Clicked the settings button. Nothing. Oh there it is. Took it a minute. Very accustomed to my Note being instantaneous.
I use the Note more than the laptop now. The screen is true 1080 so it looks amazing. |

I like my Note 3 a lot. I do a lot of web stuff (could easily run most day-to-day work functions from my phone) so the extra size is great.
Something to keep in mind is that the screen resolution and other hardware is the same as the S4 and Note3 (and the screen resolution remains unchanged on the S5). If the S5 will have a higher screen resolution -- and your eyes are good -- then you may get more screen real estate on the S5 (as well as any other hardware upgrades that phone will have). Pros for the Note 3: * Split screen is a huge productivity boon (also a feature on the S4 and presumably S5). * The stylus & its apps are very handy (Note only). * Fits in all my pants pockets and most of my shirt chest pockets, even with the Incipio hard/soft case. * The larger form factor makes room for a larger battery -- with a day of modest use (wifi / 4G web; blue tooth; GPS) I no longer find myself always searching for a phone charger. Cons -- size is big, but not too big. One-handed keyboard operation is tricky, but both the factory and SwiftKey keyboards have features to mitigate that problem. ETA It seems the S4, S5, and Note3 all have the same screen resolution (1920 x 1080) so keep in mind that on the Note3 you're not seeing anymore than you would on the smaller phones, but what you see will be a little bit bigger. If I had to choose today, I would still pick the Note3 over the S5 based on the longer batter life & stylus. |

I had an S3 and just got the S5 on Friday. The screen went from 4.8" to 5.1" and the handset itself is a few millimeters wider and several taller. I would have rather they kept it the same size as the S3 but for your purposes, you may like it. |

The one question I never see answered online is which phone is the most robust. I'm still rockin an old Galaxy S, just because it has put up with the abuse I dish out, and hasn't died. I don't know how many times I've dropped it on concrete. It's long in the tooth, but I see so many cracked screens around that I'm afraid to move to something newer. Pretty much narrowed it down to the HTC M8 or Samsung S5 if I upgrade
Personal opinion, the new phones are too big |

I don't know how many times I've dropped it on concrete. It took a while, but I did manage to break the screen on my Galaxy S Fascinate (Verizon model). It fell out of a chest pocket about three feet and landed on a tile floor. No case involved. Screen never scratched during unprotected pocket carry. I later replaced that with an S3, which I believe has Gorilla Glass II. That phone eventually succumbed in much the same way my Galaxy S did (at the hands of kids this time). I feel that the screen on the S3 scratched a lot easier than the screen on my S"1" did -- or maybe it's just all the diamonds I've been carrying in my pockets, I can't tell. I believe the S4, S5, and Note3 have Gorilla Glass III. My Note3 lives in this Incipio case and rides in my pocket without a screen protector. A couple of drops -- some on the same floor as the last two phones -- and I have gotten away without any breaks. No scratches on the screen. Personal opinion, the new phones are too big It really depends on what you need -- i use my Note 3 as my mobile office and it does a great job. I could probably do the same with an S4/5, but again the Note3 has a larger battery with longer life and the ever-helpful stylus & its utilities. |

Thanks for the info - I know it's anecdotal, but it helps. I mainly use the phone to make calls, text, some web surfing (really just look up places, research an item I'm looking to buy). Current phone is slow as crap reaching web sites compared to newer 4G LTE phones, so that's the main reason the upgrade bug has bitten me. Looks like the Galaxy S5 mini is coming out in June, so will wait til then |

Another Note 3 user. I love the larger screen, especially when browsing. Thanks stylus is nice for jotting down notes but you can do that hands free as well.
I used to use my ipad for nearly all office work and after work tasks. Now 90% is done on N3. If N4 is coming out in the fall and you want to pull the trigger on the N3, get it and then upgrade to N4 using Jump. No more contracts for tmobile. They also dropped the down payment on N3 so it's cheaper now. |
