Since the movie was released and the book is being published I wonder if his image will finally be tarnished? My first job out of college was to build a dossier on Cesar and his brother. I was in the fields with Cesar and his strikers for a year. Among other things, my investigation showed Cesar and his brother were implicated in a homicide, but no charges were ever filed. There were numerous other crimes that would land you or me in prison, but not Cesar. Over the years here in Arizona many groups favoring open borders and citizenship for illegals have used the Chavez image as a standard for the injustice they claim. The reality is Cesar hated illegals and wanted the borders closed. He saw illegals as taking away jobs from Americans of Latino descent (of which I am one). |

Chavez himself was a third generation American citizen and a Navy veteran. in his prime he was an ardent opponent of illegal immigration and actively fought against the importation of strikebreakers from Mexico. What would you like to know about the dossier? For starters, there were people who were concerned about this guy and the issues he was creating. I was one of many investigators sent to develop information on political figures. We basically gathered information ranging from background, criminal history to sexual behavior.
The information was gathered and sent East. How the information was used was not up to me. This is the first time I have ever mentioned the assignment. Enough time has past that nearly everyone I was working is long dead. It was a job. I had no personal interest in the guy but I did the job to the best of my ability. I'm sure if the tables had been turned he would have done the same. |

Growing up in Arizona, it has always been "common knowledge" that Cesar Chavez was a union activist, not a "Chicano" activist and generally opposed illegal immigration because it depressed wages for USC farm workers.
Now I see him being reinvented as a racial leader, anybody have any links to sources where he talks about immigration? |
