Make me a hero today here guys.

We bought a new desk top here recently and it has the dreaded Windows 8 loaded on it. When we turn the computer on or wake it up, we lose connection with the mouse or the keypad. I checked and the drivers are updated for each, so how do I fix this?

I thought there was inherent mouse and keyboard support on Windows...no special drivers needed.

Are either of these devices wireless by chance?

Details on the hardware?

I don't have any answers but it's probably helpful to know if the mouse and keyboard are wired, wireless or bluetooth.

ETA: couple thoughts: do you always use the same USB ports? And what happens if you plug in a mouse from a different computer? Still happen?

You could have lead with that....

I'm going to guess you have some damage especially if you didn't have this problem before the lightning hit.

Go into the device manager and click properties on the input device.  Uncheck the "allow Windows to turn off this device" box.

You need to find out if the keyboard and mouse work.  Plug them into a different computer and see what happens.

Lead with what? The lightening didn't damage the keyboard or the mouse. We used them for many months on my old 9 year old HP machine without a hitch. The only reason we bought a new computer was 1. no support for XP and 2. just got the itch to upgrade. Her motherboard was fried, not the rest of the computer. Still using her monitor as well.

Just checked and both were already unchecked. Thanks for trying anyway.

What interface are you using to connect the wireless keyboard & mouse? Logitech Unifying receiver? Bluetooth? Something else?

RIF. Doh!

USB cable.

Have you tried a different keyboard and mouse?
Being that they are 9 years old could be a issue also.

The mouse and keyboard both work fine once you unplug them and replug them in again. It's like the computer doesn't want to recognize them after waking up. Like it's groggy or drunk.

No, I haven't tried a different mouse or keyboard yet, but I can dig out my 9 year old keyboard to check. Her keyboard and mouse are only a couple of years old. I really don't believe the problem is with the mouse or keyboard, but with Windows 8.

Does the new computer have USB 3.0 ports?
Does your BIOS have a setting for XCHI Pre-Boot Mode?
You might try setting that to Disabled, if so.

http://superuser.com/questions/480045/what-does-the-bios-setting-xhci-pre-boot-mode-do

It Could Be that in 3.0 mode, the OS isn't recognizing the legacy devices properly.
Something to test, at least.

Found this http://blogs.msdn.com/b/usbcoreblog/archive/2013/11/08/help-after-installing-windows-8-1-my-usb-device-doesn-t-charge-or-it-disconnects-and-reconnects-frequently.aspx

Looking around the web for similar problems I noticed a lot of folk are having stability issues with Windows 8,  You can also try updating the usb drivers from Intel
