Have some problems. My wife cosigned on a loan for somebody she knew at school. That person has failed to pay and my wife is getting stuck with the bill. I am not happy about this. Normally this would be a cut and dried I'm screwed situation but there is something to note. My wife cosigned on the loan that this bitch was supposed to use for school. We found out later that my wife was lied to and the person had already dropped out of school before getting this loan. The loan appears to be a state loan.
My question is this: If the bitch lied about being a student would that in any way invalidate the binding nature of the paperwork? Would lying on the form be a crime for the bitch, like a felony? Would my wife be an accessory to a crime because of the crappy "ignorance is not an excuse" line?
Barring anything else would there be any other recourse for us in this situation?

Thanks
