I came to LOL when OP discovers his free a/v doesn't catch everything.

Bitdefender has a free version.
I also recommend Kaspersky (not sure if it's free) and Avast! Free Antivirus. Those are both great.
ETA: OOPS, my bad. I fail. You said spyware... you want Malwarebytes.

Spybot Search&Destroy is another one I have gotten good milage out of over the years. I prefer the "older" version without the fancy modernized GUI. Between Spybot, Malwarebytes, and Superantispyware you are going to eliminate most malware unless it is a particularly nasty rootkit or ransomware.

First post n all that. It will hunt down and quarantine everything including software licenses. Read what is quarantined before you delete it.  If there is still crap on your computer after you delete it, rename the files and change the file extension.  Example change a .exe file to a . PDF. Doing so fragments the chain and you most likely will be able to drag the file to your tras can. The just empty it.  This or buy. Mac.

Is malwarebytes much better than AdAware? I downloaded it (AdAware) for a friend's messed up computer recently but it was a bit different than when I last used it years ago, and there was obvious stuff it missed.

I stopped using adaware long ago when they started installing bloated clients. Malwarebytes has been great!

Malwarebytes seems to be the least intrusive and is pretty effective
