I needs it.  How do you pic a good plan?  The more i read about different plans, the more confused I get.  Can someone recommend a provider or a plan for an individual?  I don't have insurance through an employer.  I'm a 37 year old college student working part time, so I don't have a ton to spend.  It would be nice if it would cover the sedation dentistry.

It's not going to cover jack shit in the first year.

I have dental insurance with BCBS (I think ). At any rate, I've had several different policies. They typically don't cover shit. If I was paying for the full sticker price I wouldn't have bought it. I need a crown and I'm dreading hearing what they are going to cover.

I would check on actual prices for different services and then check what they cover. I'd also ask your dentist's office staff which is best in their experience.

Delta Dental is who my old company had.  Never really used it though.

Go talk to your dental office counter folks. They may have an idea of the plans that cover best.

I have Delta Dental provided by my job.  Seems to cover everything except braces.
Bridges, fillings, xrays, crowns-never had a bill.  Dentist likes it too.

This doesn't sound good.  why wouldn't it cover anything in the first year?

Keep in mind that I am totally ignorant of insurance.

So people don't wait until they have a bunch of expensive problems before getting it. Think of it like them covering their ass against pre-existing conditions.

People can get insurance, get a bunch of work done, then end the insurance.
They want a year of premiums before they start paying for the big things.
You'll probably get 2 checkups free, and x rays during the first year. Anything more than that will usually cost you out of pocket for the first year.
You may at least get to use their negotiated prices so you aren't paying retail for fillings, root canals, or crowns.

Just pick a plan and look at the details.

Or tell us what you think you need done.

If you have an existing issue, has any dentist diagnosed or started any form of treatment for this issue?

I haven't been to the dentist in many years so no. I haven't been getting treated for anything.

Ok, if you had, it would probably be pre-existing and not covered.

What you have been told about not covering the first year is generally correct, most plans won't cover anything other than a cleaning within the first 12 months.
