When I was a young journalist in the very early 80s, I met him. Very short and very unassuming. I wasn't impressed. But my job wasn't to be impressed but to interview and report.
He tried to make life for the farm workers better in the fields. What he should have been doing is getting them out of the fields, into school, and into better jobs. |

So I guess the relevant translation of "We ourselves" is "Nosotros mismos." If this rise in Hispanic political consciousness continues things will get interesting, because unlike another Democratic Party ethnic constituency that I could think of, the Hispanics actually have the numbers to force concessions from the political system.

Realize, in a capitalist system, you need ditch differs and burger flippers. Low skill jobs should be paid low wages but let's treat our workers like human beings right? |

That translates into even greater debt and an even bigger collapse. |

Cesar Chavez... the MLK of the illegals in the US. Some facts that they seem to "forget". He was US born (Yuma or San Luis, AZ-I'm not looking it up) so he wasn't an illegal subject to immigration laws or deportation. Served in the US Army or Navy, I think towards the end of WW2. Labor Union leader. Somehow that turned in to a civil rights activist. He organized farm unions of agricultural workers. Most were in the US LEGALLY and felt that their wages were being depressed due to crap load of illegal workers. So they unionized and striked. So during a labor dispute strike, who do you think would have no problems "making up" for the striking workers? Yep, more illegals. SO what do Cesar Chavez henchmen do? Yep, beat the shit out of them, some killed. That'll teach those scabs. Civil rights leader. Hah! |
