Cosmos: A Spacetime Odyssey.
Hosted by Neil deGrasse Tyson

Produced by Seth MacFarlane
I hope it's as good as the original.

Seth MacFarlane talks about how our country has pretty much abandoned science since the end of the 80s and how he hopes to rekindle interest and excitement about science with this "flashy and exciting" series.
deGrasse Tyson can surely deliver the "gravitas" and is a great pitch-man for this.
I'm really hoping this will be a great series, and not just a fast-flashy-hyper-edited self-serving CGI-fest like "The Universe" was a few years ago.
What ya'll think?

Agree... and disagree.

Our bodies are definitely made-up of the physical particles of our environment. But there's MUCH more to us than those physical particles. That "magic" is the part that science has always failed to explain, and much of the time completely ignored/discounted.

Same here, on both counts. I greatly admired him, and yet was frustrated with his self-importance. On the one hand, he wanted to show us that we were insignificant in the unfathomable immenseness of the universe (which in many ways, we are). On the other, he seemed to want us to believe that [as an insignificant human] his theories and fantasies about the specifics of the universe were beyond question by non-scientists.

At any rate... I loved the series and still play the beautiful music of the soundtrack often. In fact, I think I'll go have a listen to some Cosmos-era Vangelis right now.

And that's sad.

I can directly trace the calcium in my bones to cosmological phenomina. The iron in my blood can only be created by fusion. The elements heavier than iron can only be created in a supernova.

My problem with religionazis is that they're too stuck on their stupid fucking book full of the words of men. How do they know that The Big Bang, the creation of stars, and the supernovas weren't also part of God's plan.

How is that arrogant? People from every religion will sit here and tell us that their truth is the only truth because their book told them so. That is a lack of arrogance?

Their book which was written by the hands of men to consolidate power? Show me which part of the Qa'ran or even Islam as a whole isn't used as a means of power and control (And perversion!). Show me how Jesus, telling the first Pope, Petrus, that anything a FALLIBLE HUMAN decrees on Earth will be made whole in Heaven isn't a means of power consolidation and control.

I'm reasonably sure you think I'm talking about only Christians. Let me assure you that I am not. I'm talking about any who would have the audacity to tell us how the Universe and we were created.

And lastly, I'll happily call anyone Religionazi who tells me that scientific processes that we can see in progress right now are wrong because their book, which was written and rewritten long before we were able to peer into the cosmos to see these processes in action. Try to explain to them that in reality land, these processes are happening right now, and they'll tell you that they don't need to look because their book tells them all they need to know.

I'm not a fan of the simpleton, close-minded antics of many of the hardliners that you are referring to. They do their cause no justice by refusing to admit simple truths about our history that are as plain as the noses on their faces. It's the equivalent of sticking one's index fingers in one's ears and shouting "I'm not going to listen to your words... la la la la!"

But do you think that resorting to insulting the document that they consider to one of the focal points of their existence is going to change their minds? When they reduce you to a "godless heathen" in their attacks, does that change yours? You may wear that moniker proudly, but insulting what is a sacred document containing many truths of life to them is just spewing-forth worthless words for the sake of hearing yourself talk... at best.

I'm in no-man's-land in my beliefs (though there are plenty of others here with me). I DO believe that the universe is a very old, and amazing place... full of all kinds of cataclysmic history. I abhor the notion of a simple-minded, jealous, angry, god who seems impetuous and little more able to control his emotions/behavior than a child... but who is somehow "perfect" despite all of that. But I also believe to the same degree that there is a creator/life-force/God who has commanded those elements in a masterpiece of LOVE for all existence. There is MORE to us than "startdust". There is SO much more to this beautifully orchestrated cosmos than eons of random collisions of particles. There is NO doubt of this in my mind. But I feel no hatred towards those who do not agree and who aren't able to see that. My hackles only get raised when they choose to pretend that their OPINION of truth is somehow so superior to mine as to render my opinion beneath their contempt. Your poorly chosen words belied the same sharp edge of arrogance. I think that's a mistake.

Now if you'll excuse me... I'm getting tired of hearing myself talk...

Cosmos was brilliantly produced.

In the decades since there have been plenty of discoveries in the cosmos and the move to HD. Today's computer graphics can blow away those of the 1980s ... but much of the magic that made Cosmos a much watch while living in Japan in the 1980's was Dr. Carl Sagan.

Wired interview

How has the current climate around science in the US informed the new series?

Cosmos was conceived and filmed in the midst of the Cold War. The exploration of the solar system was still considered an odd thing that, maybe, if you had no other problems in the world, you might undertake. Then Cosmos airs in 1980, and its entire mission statement is all about a cosmic perspective, understanding things on the largest scale possible. Today there’s the issue of what we are doing as a species to the environment on a global scale. The environmental movement really started out at a very local level.

If I gave them the benefit of the doubt, this is a legitimate point and the reboot will be even better for it. Science does need a good story teller.

I don't though and I think it means Cosmos will be series of lectures on the importance of carbon regulation with some space stuff thrown in.

I just got done trolling my hyper religious coworker minutes prior to posting that. We were talking about this very issue and he said, "Unpossible!" When asked, he said, "Book" and accuses me of using my stupid fucking science when I disregard whole passages of holy texts.

I saw a few eps of the show as a kid, but haven't seen it since.  I was going to pick up the DVD set a few years ago, once the price came down.  Course, thing went out of print, and the price went through the roof.

So, I'm hoping this will be available online (legally) so I can give it a view.

I get tired of that sort of thing too. I've got a good friend who's a Bible-thumper and EVERYTHING that comes out of his mouth is "because the Bible says...". I was raised religious (and still believe in the existence of God and the afterlife), so I can tolerate it to a point. But it gets to the point of silliness sometimes. I was talking with him a while back and going-on about how much I grow to love my wife more every day and how she's my "buddy" and we're best friends and how this is the ideal for marriage and how I try to teach my kids that every day. And ALL he wants to do is throw-out "the Bible tells us... blah blah blah". Keep in mind that this guy has often spoken harsh words about his wife and will make comments from time to time insinuating that she leaves a lot to be desired as a companion, lover, etc. So here I am with PROOF that after 8 years together, my marriage grows stronger every day because my wife and I are best friends... and all he wants to do is to preach the word about how to go about one's marriage as stated in a book, while failing to actually LIVE it. It's asinine and it frustrates me. If you're a believer and you want to convince people how much the written word applies to man's happiness, then LIVE IT and SHOW IT to me... don't rattle-off endless memorized verses while demonstrating your lack of faith in the book you claim to hold so sacredly.

Also, I get out of bed every day and do a thousand things that just make sense... like putting-on socks, shoes, etc. This guy literally wants to quote a passage in The Bible for EVERY single thing one does throughout the day. One begins to wonder if his memorization of scripture weren't so thorough... would he have to pull-out the Good Book to look-up verse on saving oneself if he were thrown into a raging river? Or would he actually just do what comes NATURALLY??? It gets a bit wacky at times.

Btw... I do believe that many of the authors of that "book" were inspired, and that there is much truth in there. But men (then and now) are fallible, and there have been many generations of men who've manipulated ancient texts to fit their own designs and ends.
