Just picked up one. Austrian kit on a Coonan type 3 lower reciever. Action is smooth as butter and the bore is perfect. I am in love with this rifle already. Anything I should know?

If it has the metal handguards replace them or be prepared to shoot it with an oven mitt.

Yeah, here's something you should know about FALs...you're going to find out you need a G1, an Imbel, an Argie, an Izzie light barrel, an Izzie heavy barrel, Brit, and Aussie L1A1s, a Rohdie, and at least one para. Then you can start looking for parts for the more rare variations.

Don't forget, you can build one from any other parts you want as in combining parts from other types of rifles.

Removing the bipod helps balance it out a bit.  Also, I hAted the factory irons.  There are good replacements out there not to mention putting a red dot or magnified optic on it.

25 round mag is the best mag. 20s too short, 30s too long, 25s just right.

I cant believe Im the first one to say the most desirable feature of the "true" STG58 is that beautiful CHF barrel.

Why is that poor G1 white?

Also, the worst krylon-bombed one I'd seen was in the hands of someone who was going to restore it. Spraypaint camoed by the previous owner. Argentine, all matching, original receiver, serial 000065.

AFAIK, Coonan makes a very good receiver, and the StG58 is one of my favorite metric FALs variants (no, I don't own one-yes, I wish I did).

As long as it functions and shoots straight, you have done well.  Hoard ammo.  Stockpile until it hurts.  Buy spare parts.  Register on FAL Files and absorb the knowledge on that site like a sponge.

Post pics if you get a chance.  You know how we love pics of FALs

ETA:  It appears you have.

Lord Vader demanded it?
Seriously, I had 10 receivers and several parts  kits, just wanted something different.

It got a new paint job later.

You'll need a lot of STG mags now.  Think of it like a multi year scavenger hunt.

My StG-58 on an Imbel receiver built by ARS. Steyr barrels are the best.

Love it!

In Times gone by, Steyr wouldn´t let out a Barrel that was a Lemon. But, of course, draftees do things to guns, NO gun designer would dream of ...

Get original mags in original pouches. They are still out there.

The Austrian Jagdkommando is still using them, because sometimes 5.56 won´t cut it ...
