Got this bill back in some change earlier.

Top margin on the face is off.  On back side is fine.

The bill feels like all the others. Don't have one of those counterfeit checker sharpies.

Hold it up to the light. Is there a narrow strip running across the bill that shows the denomination?

Next time your at a store ask to use one of their pens.

ETA: Go to a bank and ask to exchange it for a new series.

This one is pre-strip days.  It looks okay to me, just an older bill that was printed off center.  I've seen quite a few like that.

EDIT:  Just read it is pre strip date.

Yep. Obvious fake. The real ones have even margins, see photo below for example:

The bill is from 1977.  The strips started in the 90s.

Your bill appears to be legit OP. I'm 99.99% sure of it. Run your finger across it, can you feel the raised ink, it's legitimate. It would be a very subtle feeling.

It's a real note..

Red and blue fibers can be seen. There should be a watermark on the right side. It is also a star note meaning it was put in a stack to replace another note that was damaged or offset printed too much to use.

A slight printing offset like that is common.. The star is more uncommon but adds zero value to a note in that condition.. It would have to be 100% flawless like it just left BoEP and nobody had ever touched it and then it would be worth like $20.75

I worked at a rare coin and note dealer for a year or so

Watermarks weren't added to the $20 until 1998.

ETA:  It's also a replacement note as denoted (heh) by the star printed after the serial number.

A savvy counterfeiter will be able to counter those without too much trouble.  Furthermore, I have seen real bills test as counterfeit using those pens.  They can help, but are far from foolproof.  Looking at the bill, and feeling for raised ink and composition, are still the best bets for older currency.  Even the best counterfeiters rarely capture the feel of real money.

on a maybe interesting side note.. my daughter caught a counterfeit $100 at work, using the counterfeit detector marker

customer was not pleased and professed that because of her occupation, she would never have counterfeit money!

I'm pretty sure they're printed in large sheets and then cut apart, so it's just cut a little off center.

Which would mean it was printed crooked. A single cut would have equal margins on both sides if printed correctly. I have a sheet of uncut $2 bills around here in a tube somewhere.  I used to be a printer, but never made any money. The BEP is a cool place to visit.

The digits in the serial number add up to an odd number, this proves it's a fake.

Does it feel like money should? IME, feel is the number one thing to tip me off to fake anything, but especially documents and money. Counterfeiters can often do a decent job of looks, but getting the right feel is beyond all but the top groups.

Imagine how many more bills she'd catch if she used the proper actions/tools (popping the bill, UV light, etc).
The pens just tell you it was printed on the right paper, which any good counterfeiter does by washing lower denomination bills.
