Before you start issuing tickets for violating those "state of emergency" snow orders, Make damn sure your fucking RWD patrol car has some MOTHERFUCKING RECOVERY POINTS ON THE GODDAMNED CAR !!.......
On the way out to Valentine's Day dinner lo and behold what do I see but a lone black dodge charger with it's ass hung out in the ditch ALL BUT TOTALLY blocking a downhill with a slight curve in it. So I stop and ask him if he'd like me to attempt to pull him out if he had any recovery points under the front of the car (I haz Jeep) Nope, no recovery points, and at the angle he was at the recovery strap may have damaged the front fascia on his car if I tried hooking up to the sway bar. I offered to give him and his wife a ride to where they need to go and made sure he had enough gas for the stuck Charger to still produce heat and left him to his own devices, Since he had politely declined the offer of a ride and had just called in for a wrecker..... Should I have written him a citizens ticket for being out on the road driving and causing a potentially unsafe situation by blocking the road with stuck vehicle ?? Demanded that he abandon his vehicle in case anyone came sliding down the hill crashing into his stuck patrol car, you know, for his own safety ?? Tell your chief of police to get you some $45 tow hooks .....for officer safety !!!!! |

And of course you told the copper all this... right? Right? What I told him was I thought it was stupid to have a patrol car with street tires and no recovery point on the damned thing, especially during snow. Might want to bring up snow tires and tow hooks with the chief.. To his credit he didn't seem to find much fault with my logic....You got snow tires and recovery points on your patrol car there ?? If not you might want to see about a pow-wow with your CO so you're not a hazard to the driving public by getting your shit stuck long ways across the road like a road block. YMMV.. |

8/10 rant. 9 years ago i pulled a statie out of the median .... he had been stuck in the snow for 7hrs. As I was getting ready to leave he wanted to write me a ticket for a burnt out break light on my 78 chevy 4x4..... SMH WOW, what a dick move...I asked this guy if he had enough gas to keep the heat on in the car while he waited for a tow truck to get around to coming out here and getting him...He said he had plenty, and the car was still running so since he wanted the tow truck to handle it there wasn't anything else I could do for him. <shrugs> The REAL problem was his car was stuck on a downhill with a curve in such a way that it blocked most of the road, if someone else came down that hill at anything above idle they would have taken the front end off that dodge charger. |

[shrug] Taxpayers bitch when you have capable vehicles, that you're wasting their money on flashy SUVs. Taxpayers bitch when you don't have capable vehicles, that you're wasting their money on worthless cars. Taxpayers bitch when you attend training and add strain to the budget. Taxpayers bitch when you don't have the training to handle their very specific problem at that moment... Seeing a trend here? I stopped giving a fuck a while back.

We really tend to bitch when you fuck up your fancy pursuit vehicles that our taxes pay for and up the insurance premiums on the depts. policy. I can guarantee you the ass end of that new Charger cost a fuck ton more than a set of snow tires and some recovery points. And if your out writing tickets for the public being out in the snow then you damned well should have the proper equipment to be out there yourself ...otherwise you're a hypocrite, or at least that's my take on it.

It was cheaper than the ringed shackle and doesn't make any noise banging around over bumps and such...I would have like it to have a spring clip like the front ones but it just wasn't made that way. |

LOL...I heard from a KY cop that if you tear up the vehicle you're issued then you get issued a shitty one next time it comes up to assign cars. He told us this when we were fixing a tear in the rear door of his patrol car since he couldn't find the clown that threw something into the side of it. He didn't report it either and we had it fixed by Mon. morning so no one was any the wiser. This was around '95 or so.... |

No dog bone cleats for your chain? Fail I don't use chains since if they break they cause way more damage than they are worth. Recovery straps do just fine. How you going to hook your strap to a vehicle without recovery points? The dogbone cleat fits the shipping tie down slots ALL vehicles come from the factory with. It is what the wrecker guys use. You can hook your rubberband to it if you like. I have seen far more damage from straps than chains. Chains do not store energy |

Can you do that if you're not actually in uniform and on duty ?? This guy looked like maybe he was making a run to the store or something...plain clothes, no uniform, SO in the car with him, etc. |
1 - You are a jack-ass and piss off every officer you come across with your snarky personality 2 - You seem to come across every jack-ass cop out there and don't deserve the treatment you get/got 3- combination of 1 & 2... Been around officers for more than 4 decades. The stories I hear fall into one of the three categories above IMO. |

When strap or cable breaks, it recoils with lots of stored energy. When someone attaches a chain to a strap, he has a death wish |

Most loggers use straps for tiedowns, much safer tossing a strap over a load than a chain. They weigh less, are easier to handle, and easier to store, and you don't have to deal with the whole binder issue. So, loggers use chains where they're the best tool, and straps where they're the best tool. And I've seen broken links go zinging off like a bullet when the chain snapped. |

Caught my eye cause the brochure had guns being stored in it on the cover, it was REALLY expensive though. |

Let's just back the truck up here a bit... (so to speak) "When the chain 'hits?'" Please tell me this wasn't a reference to doing a kinetic/snatch recovery with a chain, especially with dogbones. I can only say from personal experience that if a chain lets go it is capable of snapping back in both directions and breaking shit. Trying a kinetic snatch (i.e. "running pull" in redneck speak) can cause serious issues if something breaks. Contrary to popular belief chain does in fact stretch somewhat when you use it to pull, binders use the principle of chain stretch to function. The only thing more dangerous than a kinetic snatch with chain is doing it with the chain attached to the trailer ball on someone's hitch. If you ever wanted to see what a 20mm fired out of an A-10 looks like up close then try a snatch using chain and a trailer ball. There is a reason they also make synthetic winch cord too. Do some google searches for off road recovery and see for yourself what is most recommended.....Hint: it won't be chains... |
