Why would/should they do something like that? It's a useful resource for any investigative work into crimes involving the use of a firearm.

This.

Those firearms are tools.  They are used to provide evidence and analysis in criminal investigations involving firearms.

I completely agree. There is no reason to disagree with an agency utilizing firearm analysis for investigations. The FBI is not responsible for any perceived infringements on gun ownership [Talk to your politicians, people!], they are simply maintaining a collection for possible references that could be used in the crimes that they are investigating.

Not completely.  Identifying a type of or specific firearm from brass is junk.  You can however rule out a firearm.  For instance a glock could not produce the type of dimple on a primer a Sig makes.  Low beta risk and high alpha risk.

Yeah...I'm more than a little skeptical of that claim.  Not like every barrel /bolt/firing pin/extractor is custom made, or can't be changed out.

Still... what a job to have - collect (and play with) one of everything.

No, it is not.

Done correctly, it is rock solid.  Done poorly, it is as bad as any other junk science.

Its not a tool for every problem but it can work well.
