Well inspired by the .22lr at walmart threads, the girlfriend and I decided to go to walmart to look for a couple items. Inside was pandemonium, people pushing carts everywhere, hitting the bread isle hard, all the checkouts backed up into the clothes section. There was no .22, and we decided we didn't need to wait in line for our items, so we just left. Upon existing there was 0.25" of now, which means, as a highly skilled yankee driver, I had to drive. Took us like 40 minutes to get home due to everyone else on the road. Passed a few wrecks. Vans stuck on hills. People pushing scooters and motorcycles. Saw a girl abandon her car just walking with her latte! ![]() Buses sliding sideways. Saw some guy walking holding the hand of a girl as she was driving her car. I was laughing the whole time. My girlfriend was scared to death. Now we're sitting here in my apartment, I'm drinking a home brew watching the gridlock outside of my window and basking in my Northern driving prowess. |

Worked at Nortel (in research triangle) back in the 90's, went to work one day and we had like a half inch of snow overnight.
Durham freeway (147) was empty... got in to work an parking lot was empty... ask security guard WTF? He's like "its because of the snowstorm!" Snowstorm? wtf... |

It started snowing at 12:05. Everyone is screwed basically. |

Quoted: Ahh, city life. ETA: And OP if you're such a skilled winter driver why aren't you at work? I spent the morning on the phone with guys from England trying to fix a piece of equipment. Figured I could work from home in the afternoon. Not to mention, I walk to work. ![]() |

He did say he had beer and his girlfriend in his apartment. Seems to me his priorities are calibrated properly. |

Quoted: A Christian would have stopped to help.......oh, wait. ![]() The wrecks I saw significant, but not horrible (as in, vehicles immobile, but the occupants were standing around talking). I just wanted to get home before someone crashed in to us. |

I'm here but not exactly working. Our suppliers are all shut down today so I'm mostly killing time. We have a couple inches already so I'm going to let everyone else in the area either get home or slide into the ditch before I leave.

Spoke with my sister who lives in our hometown north of Durham last night. She went out yesterday, swung by the grocery store and was amazed a the crowds in the place. No empty parking spots, no carts available, people filling carts like it was free merchandise and lines for the checkouts stretched to the back of the store.
I had to ask her if she got her French toast ingredients while she was there. That got a laugh out of her. We recalled back when snowfalls of near a foot were common a couple of times per year and how everyone down there have gotten spoiled. Hopefully the power stays on because none of my sisters are prepared for the lights to go out. You southerners, especially the Tarheels be careful in this mess. You're not used to it and I recall that streets and roads that are crowned for rainwater drainage don't make for easy ice & snow driving. Last time I had to do it, driving from Raleigh thru Durham and on to Roxboro was not bad after getting past all the traffic lights north of Durham. But I recall I did have a rough drive through Durham on North Duke St one day some 30 years ago when it snowed about 1/2 inch. Every time I'd use the brakes at low speed my old T-Bird would slide down the crown of the road and into the curb. Scared my wife to be, because she wasn't used to cars almost getting stopped then sliding sideways, since roads around here are largely flat to prevent that from happening. |

Looks like about how I used to drive around when I had a jeep in college. Cold outside, top down, freezing my ass off.

This was money making weather when I was in HS. I had a 98 XJ, lifted, 33s, lockers, and a winch. $20 a pull. I'd laugh my ass off when they would make it 30' and be right back in the ditch. |

You guys stay safe in the pandemonium and hysteria.
Even if the dreaded southern Ice dosn't get ya, the hoardes of idjits will. Give 'em time to self ditch and abandon thier vehicles before heading out. Whatever ya do, take the kids sledding and enjoy a Polar wedgie! |

You could rent it in the offseason and make a fortune using your Yankee wonderfulness to teach driving lessons.

Quoted: Pfft; did my shopping Monday at Food Lion. No crowds. There WAS a shit load of folks at the Walmart while I was picking up my wife's meds, though. There were some people but it wasn't bad. |

I dusted more than that off the dogs back last time he came in. All the same, don't tear up the deck clearing it with a dirt shovel... Looks like almost enough to have some fun in!

So a few years ago when I was living near RDU it snowed on Christmas (2010 or 2011 I think). It dropped like 2", a good amount but not anything to freak out over.
The next day I get up early to head out for some of the after Christmas sales and there is not a soul out and about in Briar Creek. I walked through Wal-mart for about 3 hours and only ever saw 3 or 4 other shoppers. I then went over the the other shops and same thing. I was shocked at how people just stayed home because of only a little bit of snow. Now living in North Idaho it takes feet, not inches, of snow to shut things down and even then its still pretty active, |

Damn. That shit just ain't right. |

I recall 20 years or so ago, driving to NC from WV in some "flurries", in a Mustang GT.
The looks of awe and wonder were many from the locals. Appropriate tires and a light touch on the controls are all you need. One you can buy, the other you usually get after paying for not having it. LOL |
|
I'm sitting at work here on Capital, normally by this time I'd have 30+ customers, I've had 9 and only 1 since the snow started. Bossman said I can close when I think it's right. Just really killing time here on ARF and dreading my drive to Fuquay. I'm a recent Yankee transplant, not worried about me, but others on the roads. Just checked and Capital has a lot of cars on it, I don't have a good angle and can't see how they are moving though, every time I check they are stopped at the light. We were having fun watching traffic cams from Fayetteville before it started snowing here. Can't wait to get to my beer stash at home. We have milk, bread, eggs and a couple pounds of bacon. Should be good to go |
|
In NE Ohio, we call that "the first snow of the year".

You can see the same kind of stupidity in the summer time on I-4 near Disney World. If it is raining the idiot Yankee tourists slow down to about 15 MPH. You would think they never saw rain before. Actually, the SOB was drunk. Maybe in Michigan they don't have DUI laws so he didn't know any better. |
