Who here has ever filled out the FAFSA before?  Any tips, instructions, or pitfalls to avoid?  School requires it before the admission process can go forward.

Hell, I'm all for getting some of your illegally confiscated monies back from the rogue FED.gov of the United States.

BUTT!!! where in the COTUS does this rogue FED.gov get the authority to offer money to college/university students?

1: Hit the can before you start.

2: Have a glass of water handy.

3: You'll need your financial info so have that nearby.

You're going to be there a while.

Just have all your stuff ready, as far as earnings, savings, and investment numbers ready. Even if youre not going to use the loan or whatever

Clear your calendar of any other bullshit
eat, go to the can, and gather all your tax returns, checking and saving account statements, any investments, etc
WRITE DOWN YOUR PIN NUMBER AND KEEP IT SOMEWHERE SAFE
Don't answer the phone, texts, Facebook, ARFCOM or any other websites
I did FASFA for years, and it is the biggest pain in the ass form you will ever fill out
FOLLOW the INSTRUCTIONS, if you think for yourself it will only hurt the team

Good luck, it is a PITA

Actually its an application for a loan, but unless you are damn near destitute or on welfare you will be told you make too much money.  You have to do it every year you are enrolled.  I have to do it for both my kids and every year it's the same old story.

It is a waste of time, but the .gov requires it.

You have to do it regardless of whether you want it, or at least you did at my school. I had a full ride and still had to fill that annoying thing out.

Switch to decaf, bud

OP, it's not that bad. Have all your relevant tax info handy. If you're under 24, you'll need your parents information as well, regardless of whether they plan on contributing to your education or not. Looking up your pin is not a big deal, it takes 2 minutes (pin.ed.gov, I've needed it several times )

Take some breaks, browse arfcom, call your buddies if you feel like it, it's not a race, nor is it that big of a deal.

Just follow the instructions. If you run in to something you don't have the form for, you can save it, acquire the forms, and restart at a later date where you left off.

Do not screw up and mis-read the deadline to file (which is different depending on if its your first time filing or continuing school).

Easy as pie.

The financial aid office did a review and got me the full Pell Grant.

Thanks alot, Obama!

Just make sure you use the correct one: https://fafsa.ed.gov/

Basically fill it out online and select what schools to have it sent electronically to.  Just need to have your tax return handy.

If you have done income taxes this year and have your 1040, 1040A, or 1040EZ  It will actually tell you what line on your 1040 to enter on each line of the FAFSA or at least it did in the past

Out of all three of my degrees I was turned down for the PELL .....if you can get it go for it and use the hell out of it to better yourself

Think twice about loans though, there are some great you tube documentaries about majoring in debt.

I would rather it go to someone working to better themselves than someone walking to the mailbox each month and using my money to buy junk.

FAFSA is for a Pell Grant, not a student loan.

I've filed for FAFSA three times (once each year I was in school) and each time it probably took me all of fifteen minutes or less.

Graduating this coming May which is cool because I'm worn out on school. So many FSA types milking the system...

Your only partially correct, A FAFSA has to be filled out in order to receive the PELL and or to receive a .gov student loan.

Yeah I have even seen some institutions make students sign a promissory note for loans even though the student is not going to take a loan.

It will now automatically populate your tax information from the IRS database if you've already filed your taxes and approve them to do so.

You'll need a PIN number for your fafsa, and your social security number. Everything else they'll walk you through.

OK so which one do I fill out?

The next semester starts in May, but the 2014-2015 form lists the school year starting in July.  Do I have to do the 2013-2014 form?

I used the FAFSA for a Pell grant.

G.I Bill paid my tuition 100%, the Pell Grant was money in my pocket. (over $15,000 total)
