Looking at getting a second credit card because I currently only have a MC from my local credit union, and even though my credit score is high 700s they won't give me more than $500 in credit on it. I've never banked with USAA, but have had insurance in the past. Was going to get the Amex card with the cash back reward. Are there better options?

Amex isn't accepted in as many places as Visa, Mastercard, or even Discover.  I  have a two cards A Visa, and a Discover. I use the discover everywhere I can to get the cashback, and the visa everywhere else.  Discover "it" card has some of the best rewards out there.

I've been very pleased with my Chase Freedom card that pays 1% cash back. The Capital One Quick Silver pays 1.5% cash back.  These are both "no annual fee" credit cards.  Not every merchant takes Amex due to their high merchant fees.

Just be disciplined with your spending.

I use a Amex cash back card -- 1.25% everything and 5% back on gas and groceries with no annual fee. I've found its accepted a lot of places, but use a United Chase VISA as a fallback.

Get one that earns airline miles (Jetblue or Delta) if you want to travel. Run everything through the card and pay it off every month.
