My desktop decided to mess up tonight, I lost my iTunes, MS Office, and a lot of data.
I am going to need a new PC but I do not want anything to do with Microsoft any more, I am sick of their issues. I can't afford a Apple desktop so where do I go? |

Well.. not alot really. Linux is great, but definitely takes a higher than average understanding of computers to manage. At first glance, they have made it really easy to use "out of the box" but software installation and updates are not always painless AND finding someone to help you when you're SOL.. is not as easy as Windows or Mac. And you're not really gonna save a bunch of $$ buying a Linux based PC.
With that out of the way, Apple has the mini for 599.. and if you want a laptop the Air at 999. You are paying $100-$200 more than a similar Windows PC, but you are actual getting a well made (non plastic) product that actually also comes with some software install that you will WANT to use. So it evens out. OS X is great. Back in Windows land, Windows 8 has some learning curve, but no more than switching to OS X would... and it is the best version of Windows so far. For sure. So you're not all out there. At any rate, any PC can have issues so... backup often so you don't lose your stuff~! |

+1 on mac mini and an external HD for Time Machine. If you can spend a bit more and max out the ram
EDIT - All computers fail and the mac mini has the same basic parts as a dell, etc. The big difference in mac is way less malware, virus, bullshit and best in class tools for backup /restore. Plus its easier to use. |

Grab one of these. The price isn't bad and the specs are good. You can use all of your peripherals.
Mac Mini I have mine hooked to a 60" sharp TV and use a wireless Keyboard and Mouse. Logitech Solar Keyboard I have the Logitec M 510 mouse Of course you can use what you have already hooked to the PC |

Tried system restore, no luck. I think I am going to have to wipe everything, reload all programs and restore data from back up. I am sick of MS! I want better, affordable, options. I swear if Apple would reduce their cost they would crush MS. Probably still wouldn't Windows has pretty much every business environment simply because that's what they have been using forever. That being said I don't hate apple. In the modern computer world you only have two real options. Mac or Pc. Yes you can use linux, but it's not for everyone and getting support for stuff can be a pain. Macs are good computers they are a bit pricier, but you should face less failures over all. There will be a transition period while you get used to things working slightly differently. If something does go horribly wrong you are likely going to pay more to get it fixed. You can get used ones for a decent price through either apple or just on ebay. They won't be as awesome as a brand new computer, but not a bad option if you just absolutely get away from windows. |

Or if you are looking at Linux, download a live district, boot from CD and give it a try before you jump in n |

Finally got it, Had to delete Office completely. Do an OS repair. Delete every piece of Apple software and then reinstall everything and restore the data. I still want better options! You have been given the exact two options that exist outside of windows. Linux or Mac. I can start giving you the flavors of linux you might try, but your going to spend at least as much as you would for a new pc. Likely unless you can find a vendor willing to ship one without an os on it your still going to pay for windows, and then have to uninstall so you can put linux on. Your easiest option is to get a mac. I still stand by recommending getting a used one to save some money. |

Refurbished Mac. Same warranty. http://store.apple.com/us/browse/home/specialdeals/mac |

Just how was I stupid? I had an error it happens, I had data back-ups so in the end I did not lose anything. Yes, it did take some time to correct but things happen.
As to wanting more options with an OS what is wrong with that? Options would be nice. I have been disappointed with MS products for a while now, I just don't think they are the lead anymore, look at the issues they had with Win 8. I also am not a fan of the changes made to Office in 2013, the 2010 version is better for me. So again, I ask how is wanting more options available stupid? |

Have you backed you stuff up yet?? This. Usually weird OS issues are caused by things like failing HDD's, oddball RAM glitches, power supplies slowly going out, ventilation/overheat issues caused by dying fans, and so on. Have had all that happen to me, and using a Mac wouldn't make any difference as that hardware can and will fail as well. Had a church iMac (just over a year old) drop dead due to a power supply issue, fixed under an extended AppleCare warranty. Malware can do oddball stuff too, of course. I always scan my add/remove programs in Windows to see if anything odd has installed itself, and also check browser add-ons. OP needs to back his data up, and stop blaming Microsoft. No OS is perfect. |

You can get PC's preinstalled with Win7 or Win8, but you have to try a wee bit harder to get win7 these days. Not insurmountable, but you'll need to custom-order via the manufacturer's web site rather than walking into a big-box store. And if you prefer Office 2010, by all means, use 2010. MS isn't forcing you to use 2013. Hell, many companies are still using Office XP/2002 as they see no real reason to upgrade. So again, I ask how is wanting more options available stupid? You have two other realistic options: either MacOS or a variant of Linux, like Ubuntu. Both will require retraining... Get a basic Mac Mini. Relatively cheap, and you can use your existing USB peripherals. Around $600 for the basic model. |

I did have everything backed up, I just lost data on the PC. I fixed the issues and restored data from back up. All is well.
People's responses here are a mirror of what is wrong in our society, people are jumping to conclusions and failing to get all the details before responding. Those of you that posted helpful suggestions, I thank you for your help. |

I was on the same windows 7 install from December 2009 till ~September 2013 with no issue. So what the hell are you doing to your computer to screw things up? |
