So after hauling 3000lbs of logs to our cabin and dumping them out in the yard, I find out the splitter is messed up.  I am pretty mechanically inclined, but I don't know what to do short of a tear down.  It ran fine 2 weeks ago when stopped it after it got stuck in a huge piece of walnut that I had sledge off.  Now when you pull it, it only pulls about a foot and locks.  Let the cord back in and it pulls fairly normally.  Next pull is about a foot and locks etc.  It's getting spark and gas but won't turn go.  It's a 350cc or so 4 stroke.  Oil is fine in it.  Gas is fresh and stabilized.  Any ideas would be appreciated.

Pull the plug. Then pull the rope,  does it free spin with out the spark plug In place?

Sounds like the hydraulic relief valve on the splitter is stuck or something and won't let the motor turn over freely.  My pressure washer does something similar sometimes and I have to squeeze the handle on the spray nozzle so it can release the pressure.

Did you tow it with the fuel valve on?

Pull the belt off the pump and see if the motor turns. If it does, see if the pump turns freely. If the pump turns, the control or pressure relief valve may have a problem.

Should have a lovejoy, not a belt.

pull the sparkplug and give it a good pull. the piston cylinder might full of fuel. I think the guy asking if you left the fuel valve on was thinking the same. happened more than once to me.hope this is it. easy fix.

Won't lock up the engine. Besides, the hydraulic pump kinda makes it hard to shear the flywheel key.

Should have a lovejoy, not a belt.
The parts diagram for his model shows it being belt driven.

You're right. Kind of an odd design.

I was surprised they went with a belt drive to be honest.

Ah, that's a good thought.  I'll try that today.  The belt to the hydraulics can be disengaged for cold weather starts and I did have it off.  I also pulled the starter assembly just to check it out and it looked fine.

I appreciate the input from everyone.  It kept me from tearing the whole engine apart to fix a simple issue.  Cylinder was full of gas.  I put it away in a hurry after using it last time as it was about 4 degrees out.  Left the gas on.  As usual, ARFCOM comes through.

For whatever it's worth, I'm typing on a damn tablet.  They are good for browsing, but man do they suck to type on.  You from out west?
