The Earps and Doc were anything but the 'good guys'. The Earps preferred to disarm their opponents with the force of local ordinance and use their friends in the local newspaper office to rewrite history. They were pimps, thugs, and were involved in crooked elections, they were no better than the people they shot it out with. Probably worse because they manipulated the law to give them advantage. |

Since you put it that way, that's about the same standard of outrage people are using now with all of these secret racists. I had a guy tell me the other day, "Look, just because he (meaning Walt Disney) never said or did anything racist doesn't mean he wasn't still a racist." I just... Why are we accusing dead people of being racist now? It makes no fucking sense. Who honestly gives a shit?! I'm convinced people have way too much free time for their own good. |

You people are in serious danger of making me lose my composure. Tombstone is overrated. Better than most modern Westerns. It's at least in the top quartile. G,B&U is better, but that's perhaps the best. Sukiyaki is excellent, but I get that's not really for everyone. That probably doesn't even count if you're only figuring period-correct Western-type Westerns (e.g. no El Mariachi, etc.). So other than Clint's work, what real-deal Westerns made in the last 30-40 years are better than Tombstone? |

I read "Doc" by Mary Doria Russell. Good book, it's historical fiction but said to be well researched. It's about his life in Dodge City when he first meets the Earps. Not the killer he is made out to be by Hollywood. Also his friend was Morgan, not Wyatt. The funny part (since everyone is talking about the Earps being pimps) is how common it was for a woman to become a prostitute if she wasn't married. Apparently not too many ways for a woman to make a living out in the western frontier back then. Doc's companion, Wyatt's wife and many others had all been prostitutes. Good read. |
