Are you running a laptop or a desk top? The laptop that would be ok but for a desktop I would run a new video card. Your GPU is having to display twice the info with a second monitor and that can be a resource hog. If you are not doing any major gaming this will work fine Gegorce GT 610 and here is the link to all the dual dvi video cards. (AKA can do two monitors)
ETA: never mind just saw the post about it being a Dell vostro. The Video card will not work at all. I am trying to find something that will work that is better then the USB thing. will post when found |

There's probably a latch on the back of the case that allows you to pop off the side cover, and access the innards. Alright i found a good pic to show where to put the video card. You will want to put the card into the slot that says in the pic PC ie 2.0. it might not look exactly the same but your motherboard should have a slot that looks like it. (I figure you know this but turn off and unplug your computer before you do this ) After you get the card plugged into that slot. turn your computer on and you can ether put the driver disk in and install the drivers that way or or to http://www.nvidia.com/Download/index.aspx?lang=en-us to find up to date drivers for your new card. after you get that done plug in and enjoy the second monitor.

I know Cat parts don't work on Detroit engines, but this computer shit I have no clue. Going by the specs of the Vostro 230 desktop, it should have two PCI-E 2.0 X16 slots. You should be good to go. The video card linked at Amazon will work just fine, anything beyond that may cause issues since you only have a 300 watt power supply. Edit: Since you're going to have to do it anyway, you may as well unplug the system, open it up and take a look. That is the 100% way to be sure. Printed specs can always change. |

What is the output directly above the blue VGA cable on the back or your desktop? If that is DVI, you shouldn't need a separate card, you should be able to run a second monitor as long as it supports DVI. Am I wrong? Anybody with superior IT knowledge feel free to correct me... Looks like a 9-pin serial port. Certainly not DVI... |

Good eye. I don't know about that to be honest but Plugging in a monitor into that DVi port is a good idea to see. and to answer the OP's question for computer parts as long as the cards are compatible with the ports on the mother board they will work regardless of brand. (The exceptions are Mac's). The card I posted earlier will work great for this purpose. This is a cheaper version of that [url=https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0083YIGVU?tag=arfcom00-20]Card[/URL} and will work as well. I am trying to keep with the 610 and 620 cards as I own one and know how big they are. I would try that DVI port out of the back first and if that does not work a video card is your best bet. I checked your mother board online and know the cards I have linked will work. If anyone would like to chime in with a better cheaper card please do ETA: never mind see post below.

Yes it should. I am running one similar on my current setup. Works great for two monitors. try to get 2 of the same monitors also or the colors wont match. Mine dont. Both are dells and they still dont match. One is old as dirt though and the other is a new LED. so... ![]() |

The port above the VGA port is a SERIAL PORT. OP snap a pic of your motherboard. Just pop off the side panel and you'll see it. That way we can see what type of plug interfaces are on your board and can better assist you in purchasing the correct video card. Is this 100% necessary? |

Green tagging means it's RS-232 not a DVI output, DVI would be labelled with white. |
