| What does it cost these days to have a commercial mover move the household half-way across the country? Has anyone done this recently? Last time for me was 1979, and it was pretty expensive then. |

Cost us 6 grand to move from Denver, CO to Marshall, East Texas last summer. We packed most of the huge collection. This was with Allied Van Lines. Get about 6 estimates, they vary wildly. This doesn't count the 26' Ryder truck that we brought tools, guns, and ammo in, ourselves. Total was over $7,000, I am sure. This was 1100 miles, and a 3,000 sf house, if this is any help. We had a 30 year collection of stuff to fit a big old house, a 6,000 volume library, and enough giant heavy old antiques to make the strongest of them cringe. Allied rocked. 3 little glass doo-dahs broken.....out of *800!* boxes loaded. No damage to the priceless art pieces either. They built a crate for the 400 pound 1870 diamond dust mirror even. Awesome movers....we tipped both crews, loading and unloading, rather lavishly, and almost everything made the long haul safely. The few bits of breakage were my fault, as I was packing sloppily by then, and didn't pack them right. PS: Add about another $500 for fuel and expenses to get our cars here, 3 drivers, 2 VWs, 4 Rottweilers, and a Ryder truck, nonstop, 22 hours. Not to mention all the changeover fees for everything once we got here. Utilities, car insurance, house insurance....it all added up. |

I moved from NY to CA 6 or 7 years ago. 1 Bedroom plus a car, cost me 4000 dollars. With the exception of my car, did my stuff add up to that kind of money? I doubt it. If I do move cross country again, I'll sell all the bulky heavy stuff like furnitures and fridge here. Even at give away prices. Then get a U-haul and move what I really need, small light stuff. Buy those big heavy stuff once I get to my destination. I use Mayflower for my moving company. I used them once and was very happy with the service I received. Ever since then, I've used them for local moves too. |
| I moved this past July from shithole Detroit to the PRK (no comments please) and Mayflower charged 3050.00 and I drove two cars out. Wasn't a bad deal but I thought Mayflowers service sucked and was very unprofessional. However I got my stuff and moving just plain sucks but its 70 degrees here and no more snow for me. |
