I know this has been covered from time to time, but help me out. I'm considering a GoPro as a GP camera for the family. I want to take HiDef video of kids sports, and activities. I want to take stills, or captures that are portrait worthy. Can the GoPro do this for me, and if so, which one would be a good choice for casual use?

Thats not really what the GoPro is intended for.  The GoPro is mostly for video/photo sports applications where attaching the camera to a vehicle, bike, board etc or the body is necessary and ruggedness or waterproofing is required..

I own two and I never use them for general purpose applications.  Frankly - there are much easier to use, cheaper solutions out there.  Most P&S cameras do high quality video and great photos - and are incredibly easier to use - and cheaper.

It could do those things, but from your discription it looks like you are wanting a just a regular handheld video camera.

Open to suggestions, but full disclosure, there are times when I might mount the camera to a bike, or ATV. Possibly some hunting/camping/hiking/shooting Apps as well.

edit;

What I'm really getting at is this; Can the GoPro make good stills? If so, which one will suit my needs (non professional)?

Great still shots, great camera but not the best for taking pics of the kids running around. This came off of my GoPro 3+ black edition. I love it but for me, I do a lot of outdoor sports including snowboard, wakeboard, hunting, mountain bike, etc. If thats what you want to use it for then roll with it, love mine!

Good stills?   Maybe.  But a P&S will make much better skills, support zoom, manual exposure control and white balance etc etc etc etc etc etc.  A P&S will be MUCH easier to use, hold and control.

Can you make it work?  Sure.  Is it the best tool?  No.

Ask yourself what your 90% use of the camera is - and buy with that in mind.

All action cams reliably suck at stills.

The GoPro can take good stills, but usually by accident.  I'd rather use my smart phone to take stills, honestly.

If you're like me and would only use it for action shots a few times here and there than be put up on the shelf I recommend the Emerson action cam HD.  I picked one up for like $40 on a whim and I'm very impressed with it.  Its not as high end as the Go Pro but as far as I can tell it does what I need with out a problem. I was worried that for me the Gopro would be a waste and only used a few times before the novelty wore off, to me this seems like a good compromise.

Here's a video I took with it hooked to my passenger seat head rest  using a Velcro strap before my suction cup mount came in.

I plan on strapping it to my KFX450R and making some vids out at the sand dunes in a few days which is what I really got it for.

Look at the Canon G series, I know they can be used with a remote shutter plus it will take very good stills and HD Video
