Have had intense tooth pain for a week. Can't open my mouth, chew or bite down or sleep. Went to the dentist today, gave me light hydrocodone and a antibiotic. Pills not working. The right side of my face is swollen and painful, emanating down my neck.
Anything I can do? Or should do? Thanks. |

I get it pulled on Monday. Just got to make it until then. You might try some ibuprofen to get the swelling/inflammation down Took 800 milligrams Advil at 2 PM, three 5/325 MG Hydro at 6. Seemed to work for about an hour. I am seriously considering needle nose pliers. |

Assuming you truly have to wait until Monday the only advice I have is that if you get swollen to the point of pain while swallowing, if you can't get your pills down, or if your tongue starts to get pushed upwards at all you need to go to the ER.
And, if you try to take it out yourself I can virtually guarantee a more difficult procedure Monday. |

Find a dentist tomorrow. Why wait til Monday? Good advice. I hate to dump my long time dentist... I'll give him a call. About 20 years ago, I got hit in the face by a baler. Broke my nose, cracked my jaw and blackened both eyes. The pain I feel now is much worse than that time. Never had tooth pain in my life. |

He wanted time for the antibiotics to take affect. I can tough it out a few days. Thanks for the advice, Doc. |

My dentist has me take 2 acetaminophen and 2 ibuprofen at the same time... and generally it works pretty good. Every 6 hours. I just had a wisdom tooth pulled on Tuesday, and I'm still sore. I do know that penicillin does help the pain after a couple days of taking it, worked before I had this tooth pulled (was falling apart). |

I grew up on a farm with one crappy, anesthetic averse (I suspect he may have been a Nazi war criminal in hiding), elderly dentist within driving distance. I went on to join the Army where the dentists are mostly kids getting loans repaid and making sure I'm fit to go to a hell hole. I had ZERO good experiences with dentists for my entire life. I hate dentists. Go to a dentist. GO TO ANOTHER DENTIST RIGHT NOW. A few years ago I had a wisdom tooth crack. I ignored it for about 3 years until it got infected. It was the stone-cold worst pain I have ever felt. My jaw swole up, my face swole up and it was terribad. A call to a dentist got me 30 hydros and a 3 day wait. This was also when I drank. I burned through half the hydros and a liter of vodka in about 10 hours and it didn't even touch the pain. I finally found a doc that would see me, took my drunk ass over there via taxi and got the tooth yanked. Instant relief. I slept for 20 hours straight. Find another dentist. |

I had a problem with an inflamed nerve in a molar due to excessive heat. Nothing even came close to dulling the pain. I putzed around for over two weeks, hoping it would rectify itself, before getting root canal surgery. That was one of the dumbest decisions I had ever made, because it took another week to get into the endodontist to have the surgery (right around Christmas). The surgery was very difficult, and the anesthetic injections into the gums did not work. The doctor had to do what they call an intrapulpal injection, where they drill into the tooth, and then inject the anesthetic directly into the nerve. As badly as it hurt, it was bliss when it finally kicked in, and three + weeks of pain stopped. The other issue with waiting so long is that I ended up with some sort of trauma to the tissue under the tooth. Leading up to the surgery, I couldn't even chew a piece of bread without extreme pain. The pain wasn't as bad after the procedure, but it still lingered for a few weeks. You may have the same situation. Definitely get this thing taken care of ASAP. The pain may get better, but it isn't worth the risk. |
