Foot swelled up to twice its normal size. Thought I had broken something. Went to the ortho doc today and they told me it was most likely gout. Dang this hurts. Can't put my shoe on, can't hardly walk on it. Have to drive with two feet.
I'm on a prescription NSAID. What else can I do for the pain? |
|
I have had it a couple times. Went to the Dr's office and they gave me a shot. think it was a steroid, can't remember. Started to feel better almost immediately.
don't be a hero or an internet tough guy. Get your ass into the Doc's office for help. But yes, it hurt so bad I couldn't push the rudder pedals on the plane, so I had to get help, otherwise I cldn't do my job. |

Allopurinol every day as a maintenance drug. It costs $10 at Walmart for a 90 day supply (I think). I understand that indomethacin kicks the pain quickly. It does sound like you have a real case of it though. They gave me two weeks of indomethacin. First one went down two hours ago. Waiting for it to kick in. Trying to find a time to get in for a cortisone injection. |

eat raw tart cherries, drink lots of water, kick coffee & soft drinks, and (processed) junk food.
sounds impossible, but the pain was so bad, I did it cold turkey, and haven't looked back. as long as the pain stays away, I'll continue with this regimen. I had to change my diet, and after a year or so, it's still difficult to eat properly, to keep my blood sugar where it needs to be. my foot doesn't ache though, so I'm better off. Interestingly, in gathering information, the cause, and what you're battling againsts, seems to boil down to the body being too acidic, which is asserted by some natural health advocates to also be a common denominator in cancer patients. ETA: I wanted to do it without meds. I haven't tried cherry juice, but it doesn't seem to work for someone I know. I believe it's something in the whole cherries, fresh or frozen, that actually does the good. |

I have heard that cherries, cherry juice and extract helps. Can't speak from personal knowledge. Best wishes. Haven't had it in years. once naturally I had a bout come on me one Friday evening; no Allopurinol or Indomethecin(?) so no doctor to get any. Foot swelled up and had me whimpering like a puppy whenever I moved my foot. Called my mother and had her buy me fresh cherries, canned cherries, whatever she could find. I got tired of eating cherries but it did give me some relief. Talked to a coworker within the last month and the gout subject came up; he said coffee was supposed to work also. The Indomethecin makes me a bit lightheaded and nauseated also, so if i take it, it is at home before bed. |
| I had my first gout attack about eight years ago. I thought I had been bit by a spider or something on my toe. Some of the worst pain I have ever felt in my life. Doc gave me some oxycodone for immediate relief. Then indomethacin for helping ease the pain. Indomethacin works really well and I myself had no side effects. Now I have started to take Allopurinal in the last week. |
| Just like anything else, different things work for different people. I used to get a couple of attacks a month and was on a regular diet of colchicine. That is some nasty stuff and you won't go far from the bathroom. I've found out over the past couple of years that 600mg of allopurinol a day keeps 99% of the attacks away. I also increased my water intake drastically to about 160 a 180 oz a day. When I do have an attack, I pound the water to clean the system. Also, when you have an attack you can always try using an ace bandage to help support and immobilize the affected joint. |
|
I used to get it bad. Tried all the dietary things, no beer, etc., and still got it. I've not a a flareup since starting allopurinol. I had to very slowly work my way up to 300 mg/day in order to not precipitate a gout attack. It's been several years since I've had an attack. $4/month. |

Quoted: Less booze and red meat and Turkey, shellfish and beans! OP, Colcrys is good stuff but is really expensive (used to be Cochicine and a $4 med! ). If the doc wants to put you on Allopurinol, he will more than likely put you on 300 mg. I have had the best results by starting the dosage off small (25 mg) and then doubling the dosage each week. It takes a few weeks to get to the 300mg but seems to maintain the uric acid better. I would stay away from NSAID, it is not good stuff!I get it in my toes, feet, ankles and knees. My brothers struggle more than I do, they get it in their hips, shoulders, elbows and back. I am used to pain (cancer, brain surgery, stroke) but gout pain is the 2nd worse pain that I have experience in my lifetime! Since you are having a flare-up, I would recommend that you stay away from the turkey and ham this CHRISTmas! Turkey does me in every Thanksgiving/CHRISTmas.

| Allopurinol maintenance drug, cheap and has some other benefits long term. Stay away from excess alcohol and red meat, high protein foods. If you drink normal to above normal amounts of water each day you may not experience an attack again. Takes a few weeks for allopurinol to to build up in your system. Gout has other nasty effects, some worse than the attacks, don't mess around. |
| Gout comes from foods high in purines and the body's inability to metabolize the resultant build up of uric acid in the blood. Once the concentration reaches saturation level the uric acid parcipitates out as sharp crystals which deposit in low blood pressure areas. Typically joints furthest from the heart. |

I have heard that cherries, cherry juice and extract helps. Can't speak from personal knowledge. Best wishes. This, and pound water. I used to get it something terrible bad. I have broken bones, been shot, and all kinds of other shit. A SERIOUS Gout attack hurts way more than any of those things... no shit... Aviator ETA: I finally figured out it was peanuts also that caused mine |

I thought gout inflicted wealthy people, guess I was wrong. Used to be called the "Rich man's disease". If you are overweight, eating and drinking too much, gout can get you into the rich man's club. I wouldn't wish it on anyone. Sorry to hear you have it OP. |
