So I have grown up in Texas, hunting the Texas way. Drive to a deer stand that overlooks a corn baited area, climb into the comfort of a deer stand, and shoot at a moving target. Everything you need stays in the truck.
Well, I have been told that is B.S. hunting and the rest of the country hunts very differently, especially those people who hunt public lands. I thought it couldn't be that bad so I decided to give it a shot. I found two things out; first is that it is indeed more difficult, and second is that what gear worked for you when you had a full sized pickup truck hauling everything for you doesn't really work when you are humping it all in. I'm going to start at the foundation and see what packs people use for hunting. I'm looking for something that carries a water pouch, has an internal frame, a good quality hip belt/waist harness, and can hold at least 50l of gear. I don't want to break the bank, and if you can suggest something that can be used for hiking public trails (i.e., doesn't look like some para-commando pack), that would be even better. I know I can get everything I want very easily if I shell out $4-500 and go looking for an Eberstock or something like that...but I'd like to keep it under $200 (street price, not MSRP). |
