My Grandma used to put up both sweet and hot chow chow and I haven't had any since she passed back in '94.

I was at the store earlier and saw Mrs. Renfro's Hot Chow Chow. Bought a jar and just tried some. OMG!! Soooo freakin' good! Has a nice bite to it as well.

Anyone else like the chow chow?

Pickled cabbage with onions and peppers. At least that's what's in this jar. Grandma put other stuff in hers, carrots, okra..

I think chow chow is only found in north and east Texas, a very regional thing.

My grandmother used to make it too, I've never seen the Mrs. Renfro's brand chow chow before but I'll have to look for it now.

First time I've had this Mrs. Renfro's and it's very good!

But I don't think it's just a regional thing. I can recall an episode of that old Martin Mull fake local talk show... he had a guest, a guy asking for help catching the thief who'd got into his root cellar and stolen his chow chow...

Fernwood Tonight!!  Remember that?

This isn't the chow chow clip... but still...

My Slovak grandmother in Pennsylvania made it for years, so it's not regional.

We always had homemade chow chow when the peas started coming in.

Ours is normally mainly peppers and onion.

My Mom made it when I was a kid in Tennessee, it's not regional. There may be regional differences in what goes into it.

I LOVED Fernwood Tonight.  Remember the episode where Martin Mull eats dinner with a family who listens to his show?  He looks at the food on the dinner table and says, "English muffin pizzas--my favorite!"

Brother my Grandma made some great Chow Chow. It was slightly sweet with just the right amount of bite. She passed in 96..I still miss her.

I have never found any store bought Chow Chow that would even come close to Grannies.

Give it a try, it's really good. The little heat is very subtle and surprising. Very, very good. I'll have to give the sweet version a try next time I go to the store.

Wal-mart lists it on their website locally, $25 for 6 jars.

Comes from Ft. Worth.

Well, guess I stand corrected on it being a regional thing!

I find so
few people who seem to know about it outside this part of Texas I just
kind of assumed it wasn't widespread.

We used to put it on ham and mustard sandwiches.

Negative.  I think its pretty much known across the South.

You may or may not know that its available at Cracker Barrel.  I had a bowl of pinto beans and corn bread the other day and the waitress asked if I wanted chow-chow or diced onions.

Of course I got both.

I like to put it on hamburger steak

We make and can our own with peppers and onions from the garden. We have even used diced up cucumber in it from time to time.

That stuff is great on hot dogs, sausages, and beans of most types, especially butter beans.

When you drive through the rural parts of the state, you sometimes see chow chow for sale at the little mom and pop stores or tomato stands.....and it is usually very worth stopping and getting a jar or two.

Make our own but the neighbors homemade is better. She takes considerable more time doing it.

This is what I use on hotdogs, metwurst and bratwurst. Even corn dogs!

Mrs Renfro's hot or mild sold in Wegmans grocery stores in NY and PA for $3.69 for 16oz. jar.  EVERYONE'S Grandmother used to make this stuff up here.

We have this in little stores south of I-10. It's right next to the pickled mirlitons. Ours tend to be spicy as hell.

Chow-chow is very big in South Carolina and southern North Carolina.  Dad used to go out of his way to buy a case of it once or twice a year since we lived almost in Virginia.  Chow-chow sure made plain pinto beans a whole lot tastier.
