My Grandma used to put up both sweet and hot chow chow and I haven't had any since she passed back in '94.
I was at the store earlier and saw Mrs. Renfro's Hot Chow Chow. Bought a jar and just tried some. OMG!! Soooo freakin' good! Has a nice bite to it as well. Anyone else like the chow chow? |

I think chow chow is only found in north and east Texas, a very regional thing. My grandmother used to make it too, I've never seen the Mrs. Renfro's brand chow chow before but I'll have to look for it now. My Slovak grandmother in Pennsylvania made it for years, so it's not regional. |

You will find it all over the Southeast as well............it's great with pinto beans

First time I've had this Mrs. Renfro's and it's very good! But I don't think it's just a regional thing. I can recall an episode of that old Martin Mull fake local talk show... he had a guest, a guy asking for help catching the thief who'd got into his root cellar and stolen his chow chow... Fernwood Tonight!! Remember that? This isn't the chow chow clip... but still... Quoted:

He looks at the food on the dinner table and says, "English muffin pizzas--my favorite!"

Give it a try, it's really good. The little heat is very subtle and surprising. Very, very good. I'll have to give the sweet version a try next time I go to the store. |

Quoted: My Mom made it when I was a kid in Tennessee, it's not regional. There may be regional differences in what goes into it. Quoted: Not so. I'm an ol Hillbilly from WV. Quoted: I can get it here, and I've seen it advertised in South Carolina too. Well, guess I stand corrected on it being a regional thing! I find so few people who seem to know about it outside this part of Texas I just kind of assumed it wasn't widespread. We used to put it on ham and mustard sandwiches. |

You may or may not know that its available at Cracker Barrel. I had a bowl of pinto beans and corn bread the other day and the waitress asked if I wanted chow-chow or diced onions. Of course I got both. |
|
We make and can our own with peppers and onions from the garden. We have even used diced up cucumber in it from time to time.
That stuff is great on hot dogs, sausages, and beans of most types, especially butter beans. When you drive through the rural parts of the state, you sometimes see chow chow for sale at the little mom and pop stores or tomato stands.....and it is usually very worth stopping and getting a jar or two. |

Dad used to go out of his way to buy a case of it once or twice a year since we lived almost in Virginia. Chow-chow sure made plain pinto beans a whole lot tastier. |

Just made a sandwich of a leftover chicken breast and put a heaping spoonful of that hot chow chow on it. Oh, man!! |
