They apparently copper foul so bad that after a mag they just stop working.
that's the conversation i just had with a co-worker. I guess he read it on the internet somewhere from someone who is in the military so "he knows what hes talking about". At what point do you just give up trying to help people? I own both BTW and both have worked great. For the average shooter i don't think one or the other is going to make a damn bit of difference. |

By the way Chromoly barrels require proper disposal as they are contaminated this normally cost over a $100 a barrel . But out of the goodness of my heart I will take it for free and get rid of the junk. |

Sorry. after a mag the fouling will be so bad it wont work any longer. Quoted:

Tell him if he shoots about 100 chrome bullets through it the barrel will become chrome lined. Sorry. after a mag the fouling will be so bad it wont work any longer. Copper fouling = bad - but - chrome fouling = good! |

I tell most folks that if they maintain their gun it won't matter all that much except maybe for barrel longevity. And most people will never shoot out a barrel anyway. All of those Garands must be completely useless too since they aren't chrome lined.
Oh shit. I didn't think about that. Any one need a junk CMP Special grade garand? I've put about 50 rounds through it so i think its coming to the end of its life. |

Dude, I will sacrifice a bit since this is the holiday season and pay shipping to my buddy's shop. We will dispose it it in a dignified manner. |

and the story changes. "its not chromoly. It must be Stainless". parkanized stainless mind you but stainless. SMDH. For fuck sake man. I hate trying to help people. I think I may have cleaned the stainless barrel on my 3-gun AR two or 3 times in the past five years. Still shoots sub-MOA. People greatly overestimate how often barrels need cleaned. |

That, and many times the "cleaning" process does more to wear the barrel than did the shooting that fouled it. |

Good lord! Please stop.
Chrome/Moly describes a steel alloy base material for the barrel (will eventually rust from the elements if not cared for). Industrial chrome plate describes a thin plate added to military grade firearms (actually my old CZ-82 has it) to provide a wear resistant hard coating for bore and chamber. One can chrome (chrome plate) a Chrome/Moly steel barrel, but the plating "builds" on the original surface and must be compensated for in the original bore. Stainless steel: Base barrel material is stainless steel (usually there is no coating or plating applied) Industrial chrome plating is one of the hardest platings in the industry, and what you see after plating is what you get. It is not going to break in, lap in, wear in, etc., so don't worry about it. IMO, most of the precision shooters would rather have a non-chromed bbl (stainless or unplated steel) because they want to lap in the bbl with a break-in procedure, then keep it cleaned and oiled for subsequent use. |
