[ARCHIVED THREAD] - Tell me about GoPro (Page 1 of 2)

| I watched the first two segments of 60 Minutes that came on after the football game today, one of which was about GoPro cameras (more specifically, the guy who created it). I've thought about getting one for a while but I'm not sure if it's worth it. What says GD? Yea or nay? |

Worth it? It's pretty much the only way to go...if you want awesome action video. Is there any significant difference (for a casual user) between the White, Silver, and Black models? The white has a 5mp sensor and records 1080i at 30 fps. Budget model The silver has a 10 mp sensor and will record 1080i at 60 frames. Mid range The black has a 14mp sensor and has a nearly 4k resolution. Upper range I wouldn't scoff at any of them. I am running the silver. I would like the black simply because the frame rate in 1080 can be set to 60 fps. And derp I forgot the best part, the 4k sensor. |

They're the best. Here's a short spearfishing vid I made with it mounted to the end of my speargun.

get a silver and a PNY 32gb card. Dont get any other brand of sd cards. The best SD card yet for the GoPro 3 |

What's a good camera for doing a video at the range, I haven't bought shit since 02.

I like them, but there are times I dislike the fisheye lens. Also be aware that some impacts can turn off the camera, and you can lose whatever you're filming.
Honestly, I couldn't tell you. I use my gopro almost exclusively for riding. However, I will say that I have seen some youtube pov shooting vids that looked ok with a gopro, however, the fisheye does make things look further away than they really are. |
|
Don't know how the quality is, but I remember these were quite expensive when they first came out.

Love mine that I have on my hexacopter
Shot this most recently- Rally cars in the dirt. http://youtu.be/5JcqbvGQ2fI |
| Pure awesomeness and Gopro has the best picture of any of the ones currently out there. Owner of 3 Silvers here. The newest versions of the Hero3+ should have all the bugs worked out of the Black. Go Black if you can afford it. The Silvers do way more than I will ever need however. |

The fisheye can be pretty much eliminated by not shooting in Wide angle format. |

What are you going to film? If you're not going snorkeling, skydiving, base jumping, canyon-jumping-back-flipping on your bicycle, or menacing families in NYC on your days off, what's the point? I suspect that most GoPro buyers use their GoPro to record stuff that could just as well have been filmed with a regular camcorder or better off captured with stills. For what they are, they're the best thing on the market - I just think they're way more than most buyers need. |

I love mine. I have 2, one hero 3 black and one hero 3+ Black.
You'll find you "need" more accesories, so be prepared to spend $400 plus an additional $100-200 for accessories. The only thing I don't like is everything is stored in 1000 item folders. So the time lapses take longer to produce. And the battery life kinds sucks (2.5-3 hours) |

I own a GoPro Hero black 3 and just sold a GP hero 2, for those that don't know, the GP H4's are not long for the wind. They are the top dawg in their market but I think the software is buggy at times and updates do not come fast enough.
IMHO, they are starting to get like Apple w/their quick releases ...read up some GoPro Fanatics Forum |
| Been wanting one to use while riding (sportbike), eyeing the black but keep hearing about issues. It was mentioned in this thread that the newest ones will have the bugs worked out, is there a certain date I should look for? Made after? Or certain model numbers? Don't want to snag a buggy black that has been sitting on the shelf a year or more. |

Worth it? It's pretty much the only way to go...if you want awesome action video. Is there any significant difference (for a casual user) between the White, Silver, and Black models? I have the HERO2 which was after the HERO and before the "color" series. In addition to being slightly smaller, the color models have increasingly better cameras (5, 10 & 12MP), better slo mo, and the top of the line includes the WiFi remote that you most likely want anyway. Garmin has just introduced a helmet/action cam but I haven't researched it. |

I've been considering one as well for range training. I like the form factor of the Contours better, but they are out of business for the time being. True on both counts. The Contours didn't look bad attached to your helmet or weapon; the GoPros look absolutely dorky and present a much greater snag hazard. You'd think the initial market/early adopters would have been more fashion conscious since the initial cameras were similar in specs, but somehow GoPro won out. |

The HERO2 has wide, med and narrow FOVs. Obviously, the narrower the FOV, the more difficult it is to aim the camera. I use it primarily in a helmet mount and other than having a buddy check it, it's impossible to see what you are filming (the Contour had aiming LASERs that came on to help align it!) unless you have the LCD Back (not useable in my helmet mount) or the WiFi Back and a phone app to see what you're capturing. |

Yep, Worth it. every penny Here is mine on my quad. When you said "quad" I thought "that is one hell of a jump!" Though you meant 4-wheeler -v- quad rotor. |

I can't hang with a GoPro sticking out the top of my ski helmet like some alien antenna. My Contour mounts much more sleekly to the side.

Not really, they come out w/firmware updates for almost every gopro item they sell on a regular basis...they just keep tweaking them and working out their bugs, kinda like iphones, they work but new IOS come out all the time. Are'nt these hi tech toys wonderful!

I've had both a ContourHD and, now, a GoPro 3 Black Edition.
The GoPro is OBVIOUSLY the superior camera. Suppose that's also evidenced by the fact that Contour is bankrupt and GoPro isn't. There's no contest IMO. Love my GoPro. Plus, it shoots 4k now. Which is cool. |

I have used both (borrowed his when we rode Circuit of the Americas) for motorcycle track events with great results. Tank mount, windscreen, helmet on mountain bikes. Chest mounted for zip lines and even took it scuba diving (watch your depth). He uses his Hero2 for off-road stuff in his Raptor. Hero3s of any "color" have had a very high failure rate at the track. For whatever reason, the new ones just aren't as robust as the HD and the 2 |
