| GD I need advise on a new toilet. The old one has provided good service for 50 years; but it now takes a half a minute to flush, is hesitant to digest the wads of paper my girls stuff in the thing, and is probably due for replacement. What are some good options? I don't want the fanciest, most water efficient, heated seat, or other extra junk. I just want a good solid fixture that will last foe years, suck down prodginous amounts of crap, requires minimal maintenance, and is economical to purchase. |

That thing is like a black hole in the bowl |

My crapper story...
I have four kids (now all teenagers) and as plumbing issue came about, I replaced our crappers with pressure assisted toilets. That was several years ago. The toilets I have are made by Kohler with a Sloan pressure tank, and at the time ran around $300-$350 each. Inside the "tank" there is a closed system, a sealed pressure tank into which water is directly filled resulting in pressurized water which is released into the bowl when you flip the silver handle... This results in a rush of water much like you'd see in a commercial/public toilet. They're noisy compared to traditional low-flow-flush-it-three-times-to-get-it-all-down toilets, but on the flip side I haven't had an overflow or had to plunge a toilet since they were installed. That make them worth it to me. I'd do it all over again in a heartbeat. Anyway, they might be worth taking a look if they fit your idea of economical. |

Replacing the flush valve, float valves, etc is no big deal. But how does one go about removing 50 years of hard watter build up from the enclosed water passages. Quoted:

American Standard Champion 4, comfort height, elongated bowl. Love mine. 4 years and no plunging. I've tried really hard to stop it up to no avail. Try this; Screw that. I like cake too much! |

Toto Ultramax II or Drake II.
I researched this a few years ago and Toto is the way to go. It uses "normal" parts, unlike pressure-assisted toilets and some of the other offerings. Being able to get parts at 3pm on a Sunday from a local hardware store is nice. Take those flush tests with a grain of salt. Oh wow, it can flush 87 little balloon things. Great. Can it flush 87 little balloon things slathered in peanut butter? In the 2+ years we've had our Toto toilets, I've never had to use the plunger. The contractor-grade toilets that were in the house when we moved in would clog about once per week. TOTO. Link to my thread |

We've had a total of 8 Toto Drake stools in different houses over the last 6 years with zero problems. |
