How, how long does it take, how much does it cost, and how much maintenance is involved?

It takes three years and costs $640 million.

You'll know when it's finished because it's unusable.

I know I'm asking a lot from GD...

But I also know, GD knows pretty much everything.

Biggest expenses are probably a digital camera and a black leather couch.  Wait, what type of site were you looking to start?

I'm interested in starting a small site of my own, nothing huge...if that helps.

It really depends on what type of site you're setting up.

I make web sites for a living and I've charged anywhere from $500 to over $10k.

depends on what your requirements are.

free hosting + wordpress meets most basic requirements.

ecommerce? you're better off just using the amazon marketplace.

How long is a piece of string?

You can do it for free in ten minutes and never maintain it.  Or you can spend hundreds of millions of dollars over several years and saddle future generations of taxpaying Americans with the maintenance of a hellhole.

It really depends what you're trying to do .

Already said, I want to start a small conservative site.  Most I've found are not very user friendly to say the least.

Site?  Meaning...?

News site?  Bulletin board?  Discussion forum?  Personal opinion site?  Conservative memorabilia store?

Depends. Name service is inexpensive, as is hosting, mostly...software can be free depending on what you want, it's all in the wisher's ability to work it. If you know computer stuff, can make php perl sql and other stuff work and have some time, you can do it on the cheap. If you are approaching this from the "I has a keyboard, does it need a CD to work" angle, well...it'll get expensive.

Meh, I've got another degree to complete...as long as the GI bill doesn't go away.  So I've got the potential to know what phpperlsql means.

There are a lot of choices of different forums to compare/contrast that you can setup, most free.  Simple Machines seems to currently be the new hotness.  PhpBB was all the rage for a while.

$10/year or so for a domain name, and you can probably get hosting for cheap/free if you don't have much traffic.

free sites are everywhere.  A lot templates out there too.  For the hard core, roll your own HTML

Domain name first.

Forum software second.

Free forum software like PHPBB, or Simple Machines works well.  The only problem is if you ever want to convert to another, more powerful software, it may end up causing glitches.

Pay forum software can be purchased outright (license), or hosted with a small monthly fee that is determined by your usage.

I've got a few sites running and use Invision Power Board.  VBulletin is very good as well.

If you want to have a front page, make sure whatever you are using is compatible with Wordpress, or keep them separate with no bridge.

Free hosting is crap and if you plan on getting any traffic at all you should plan on never using them Ever.

I would suggest a small shared hosting account to start and wordpress.  (Hosting would cost around 25/month wordpress is free tho there are many plugins that cost money)

As for upkeep you would basically be doing all of the editing/copy creation so there wouldnt be any additional costs. Wordpress is good for letting you know there are updates available and it is basically just a click to install deal as they pop up - super easy.
As for how long it takes

With fantastico you can install and set up a basic wordpress site in 5 min. (HELLO WORLD)

Set your menus to automatically add new pages as they are created and BAM start making posts/posts CONGRATS you have a website.

Ive made sites from 3K to near 80k - it really depends on what features you want, how you want it to look, will it work in mobile and how large of a moonbat the client is

If you need help or more suggestions shoot me a PM. I will help all Arfcommers with free web advice.
