(AP) (LOS ANGELES) The number of homicides in Los Angeles this year has reached 589 after several incidents over the weekend -- the highest rate since 1996.
This is after the city had a particularly violent weekend, with ten possible slayings under investigation in addition to five shootings by the LAPD, which resulted in two deaths.
Police say they are concerned about the latest wave of violence, most of which occurred in South Los Angeles -- at least seven of the slayings are believed to be gang-related.
The incidents came a week after LAPD Chief William Bratton announced that he would beef up police presence in the area following another string of violence that left five dead.
Police say the homicide rate has steadily risen over the past three years.
A total of 586 people were victims of homicides last year. In 1996, the total was 707. The numbers peaked in 1992 with a 1,092 slayings.
