He was able to distract a ruthless bounty hunter who intended to sell his life to a space gangster and plug him with a blaster shot by surprise without breaking a sweat. What the revisionist bullshit is about is that Han's use of deadly force is only vindicated if Greedo shoots first. In this mindset Greedo becomes Han's VICTIM if Han shoots first, even though Greedo has a gun trained on Han and full well intends to murder him. This skewed equivalency is similar to the whole 'Why did the CCW'r shoot that thug instead of giving him his wallet?' wail that goes up from those who feel that the transgressor's rights are somehow paramount over the victim's. |

Yup. At that point in the movie we've only just met Han, and we don't know much about him. That scene gives you an important data point - he's in it for himself, and he's going to toe the line. Later on in the story he has an arc where he sacrifices himself (by going back to help Luke instead of paying of Jabba) but in the cantina we don't know if he's a good guy or a bad guy. By making Gredo shoot it looks like he has no other choice and is being reactionary. |
